Notre Dame Cathedral Ready to Reopen
나는 파리를 3번 방문했다. 유럽에서 거주 햇수가 꽤나 긴 편을 고려하면, 그리 많이 방문한 것은 아니다.
하지만, 나는 파리 2번째 방문은 엄마랑 같이 갔었고 우리 엄마는 노트르담 성당에서 Glory and Grace 어떤 감정을 느꼈을까, 성당에서 처음이자 마지막으로 눈물을 보였었고 그 곳이 바로 파리의 노트르담 성당이었다.
참고로 우리 집안은 무교이다 Lol.
그런데, 노트르담 성당이 활활 불타오르는 뉴스를 보고 엄마가 많이 마음 아파하셨었다. 솔직히 그때 나는 그냥 남의 집 불구경 같은 마음 정도? 에구, 어쩌나... 이 정도였다.
내가 파리에 3번째 방문을 하고... 궁금해 노트르담 성당의 현황을 자세히 보러 갔을때에는 정말 가시고기마냥 앞모습 빼고는 다 타버려 뼈대만 앙상한 성당 옆과 뒷 모습을 보고 진짜 너무 놀라고 할말을 잃었었고, 나도 모르게 눈물이 나더라.
오늘, 우연히 노트르담 대성당이 재개할 것이라는 뉴스를 발견해서 한 번 같이 읽어보고 어렵거나 중요한 영어 표현을 짚어보려고 한다.

맞다. Literally, the fire은 엄청나게 끔찍하고 황폐한 devastating fire였다. 나는 개인적으로 유럽에서 진행하는 ceremony는 스케일이 적당하거나 크고 볼거리가 재미나다고 생각한다. Mass(미사) ceremony를 broacating 한다면 전세계의 천주교인이 주목할텐데 콘서트와 기타 이벤트까지 한다니 많은 Audiences가 몰리게 될 것이니 준비를 많이 할 것이라고 생각한다. 아무래도 올 해 올림픽을 개최하면서 잘 다듬고 꾸며놓은 파리의 이벤트 뷰는 분명 멋지리라 생각한다. 유럽과 기타 천주교가 국교인 나라에서는 live로 송출해주지 않을까 싶다.

Once reopened, about 14 million to 15 million yearly visitors are expected at Notre-Dame, a Gothic medieval masterpiece that was among the world’s most visited monuments before the fire shut it down. Archbishop Ulrich will strike the doors of the cathedral with his staff and officially reopen them during a religious ceremony attended by Catholic dignitaries, foreign officials and donors who contributed to the renovation.
Archbishop Ulrich가 노트르담 대성당의 문을 strike 하며 공식적인 성당의 reopen이 되는 종교적 세레모니라니...!! 멋지겠는걸? Catholic dignitaries(높은 직위의 사람들)은 내가 모르는 사람이겠지만, Donors에는 누가 있을까? 2024 파리 올림픽의 루이비통처럼 의외의 기업이 있었을까?
President Emmanuel Macron of France, who had vowed to reopen the landmark within five years of the fire, is expected to give a short speech in front of the cathedral ahead of the ceremony, which will be followed by a concert. Previous suggestions that Mr. Macron might speak inside the cathedral had sparked criticism that he was flouting France’s strict secularism rules.
마크롱 대통령이 5년 안에 reopen 하겠다고 vowed 했구나! 성당 앞에서 마크롱의 a short speech 뒤에는 concert가 이어질 것이다. 혹시 be followed by 때문에 해석 순서가 헷갈리는 사람이 있을까? 그렇다면 그럴 필요가 없다, 그냥 차례대로 읽어주면 된다.
원래는 마크롱이 성당 안에서 speech를 하려고 했다보다, 그런데 "프랑스"의 secularism(특정 종교의 우위를 거부하고, 사적 영역에서 개인의 종 교 활동은 인정하지만 공공장소에서 종교적 의식과 표식은 제한하는 원칙) rules을 flout(mock)하는 것이라고 강렬히 비판을 받아서 그 제안은 took back 되었나보다.
The cathedral will celebrate its first Mass on Dec. 8 to consecrate the altar(제단), which will receive the relics(성유물) of several saints. Mr. Macron and about 170 bishops from France and elsewhere are expected to attend.
Consecrate: to make or declare sacred, to devote to a purpose in a very sincere manner.
12월 8일에, 몇 saints의 relics(성유물)가 있는 altar(제단)에 신성한 Consecrate 의식을 하는 미사를 할 것이라고 한다. 성당은 종종 가봐서 어떤 식을 거행할 지는 대충 감은 온다.
A Mass for the general public will be offered later that day, and visitors will be able to enter the renovated cathedral for the first time since April 15, 2019, when flames tore through its wood and lead roofing, destroyed the iconic spire and seriously endangered its stability. Officials said it was too early to provide a guest list for the ceremonies, but Pope Francis has said that he would not attend.
일반 미사도 바로 같은 날 진행 된다니, 일반 신자들도 배려하는 마음인 것 같다. 프란시스 교황은 참석을 하지 않는다고 하네? 이유가 뭘지 궁금하다! 뭔가 공연도 하고 좀 더 이벤트 같은 느낌이라서 그러셨을까?

Some renovation은 Reopen 이후에도 진행이 될 것지만, Covid-19 lockdowns도 그리고 toxic lead(독성 납) 문제에도 불구하고 5년 안에 성공적으로 재건을 성공적으로 해내었다고 말한다.

당분간 개인 방문객만 가능하고 무료로 온라인 예약이 되며, 스마트폰 앱 가이드가 나올거고, 2025년 봄부터 단체 투어가 가능할 것이라고 한다.(아, 근데 아직도 성당 내부의 공기 컨디션이 막 좋지는 않은가보다)

An investigation continues into the cause of the blaze, but a definitive cause may never be determined. The leading theories among investigators are that it was sparked by an electrical short-circuit or a discarded cigarette.
아직도 blaze 원인을 찾고 있다...? A definitive cause는 아마 never defined 일거다...?? (신기하다... 원래 전문가들은 화재를 워낙 많이 접해서 최소한 합선과 담뱃재의 차이는 알 수 있을거라고 생각했는데...)
