S. Korea-U.S. Joint Fact Sheet announced; Lee says alliance "deepened"

South Korea and the U.S. today unveiled the details of the joint fact sheet on trade and security, some two weeks after their leaders' talks, which President Lee Jae Myung said has allowed for a tighter Seoul-Washington alliance. Our correspondent Yoon Jung-min has our top story. President Lee Jae Myung himself announced some of the fact sheet's key points on Friday morning. "The South Korea-U.S. trade and security negotiations, which were one of the biggest variables in our economy and security, have finally been concluded."

-----------------

On the trade front, President Lee said the previously agreed-upon investments worth hundreds of billions of dollars to lower the U.S. tariffs will be made in projects that are "commercially reasonable." "Distrust and concerns have been clearly dismissed, as raised by some, that it will be a give-away in disguise that will force Korea to make investment in projects that will make it hard to recoup the initial investment." He went on to say that the deal will elevate the Korea-U.S. alliance to a new level to involve cutting-edge industries like AI and semiconductors.

On the security front, the allies have agreed to cooperate on South Korea building nuclear-powered submarines, which requires U.S. support under the current bilateral nuclear energy agreement. "We have succeeded in securing the U.S. government's support to expand our authority for uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing." The South Korean Commander-in-Chief also said the two sides have reaffirmed the U.S.' commitment to the presence of U.S. Forces Korea and to continued cooperation for the transition of wartime operational control from Washington to Seoul.

-----------------

"The Korea-U.S. alliance has developed and deepened into a future-oriented, strategic comprehensive alliance in earnest that encompasses security, the economy and high-tech." Friday's announcement comes about two weeks after Lee and Trump met in Gyeongju, longer than expected over reported differences over issues related to nuclear-powered submarines.

-----------------

As he thanked the people for their trust in the government as well as his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump for his "rational decision," the President commented that he found himself frustrated due to pressure at home by some over the prolonged trade talks. President Lee added it's more of a start than a final end as each country will continue to fight to defend its own national interests and global uncertainties will not be resolved in a short amount of time.
