Local authorities have wrapped up firefighting operations, but nearly 300 people are still unaccounted for. Park Jun-han leads us off tonight. Firefighting operations at the Wang Fuk Court public housing estate in Tai Po were officially declared over on Friday. The announcement came two days after the devastating blaze erupted on Wednesday afternoon.

A Hong Kong government spokesperson told AFP on Friday morning that "the flames have been largely extinguished and firefighting operations have ended." The BBC, citing the same official statement in its live updates, confirmed the fire was finally under control across the seven affected blocks of the eight-block complex. Hong Kong's deadliest fire since 1948 has so far claimed at least 128 lives, including one firefighter who died during the operation.

With the number of those who are killed and injured adding up, authorities are still verifying the exact number of missing persons. In the meantime, the police said they will begin to collect evidence as part of their investigation, which is expected to take three to four weeks. What's next is the search and rescue operation. And at the same time, we will endeavour to effect forcible entry to all the units of the seven blocks concerned so as to ensure that there are no other possible casualties."

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has set up nine emergency shelters for the fire-affected residents. To further assist those who lost their homes and are seeking their family members, many volunteers visited the shelter to help. "We came to Tai Po today to distribute supplies to the affected residents. There are cookies, candy, beverages, and soda, as well as cooked meals and fruit.
-----------------
We also brought daily necessities like shoes, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and many other items. Basically, whatever the disaster victims need, we make sure they get it. We feel it's something we absolutely have to do." More than 2-thousand-300 hundred firefighters were involved in the emergency response, while survivors are still desperately waiting for their family members who are left unaccounted for.
