President Lee wraps up second summit with Japanese PM Takaichi

We begin in Japan, where this afternoon, President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held their second summit. Our Blue House correspondent Song Yoo-jin, who is traveling with the president, joins us live from Osaka, where the Korea press center is located. Yoo-jin, what's the latest? Dami, President Lee has just one official engagement left today, a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Takaichi. After arriving in Osaka this morning, the President traveled to Nara Prefecture, Prime Minister Takaichi's hometown, for the summit talks.

----------------

The meeting began with a closed-door, restricted session attended by a small number of aides, followed by an expanded meeting and a joint press briefing. The summit appeared to be held in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Take a listen. "I would like to express my deep gratitude to Prime Minister Takaichi for the exceptional welcome and the special consideration she has shown, going above and beyond in her efforts to improve South Korea-Japan relations." "I am delighted to welcome President Lee to Nara, a place he said he wanted to visit during our last summit.

----------------

Since taking office, this is the first time I have invited a foreign leader to Nara. I believe this reflects the friendship and trust between President Lee and me." Presidential Spokesperson Kim Nam-joon said the level of protocol was notably elevated, with Prime Minister Takaichi personally receiving President Lee, and a large-scale security presence from the airport. Tell us about the summit's major outcomes. What stood out was what President Lee described as "small but meaningful progress" on sensitive historical issues, particularly the Josei coal mine.

More than a hundred forcibly mobilized Korean laborers and Japanese were killed in a flooding accident in 1942. "For the first time, the remains of the victims were recovered last August, more than 80 years later. Our two countries have agreed to pursue DNA testing to identify the remains and to hold working-level talks on the specific details." "We welcome the progress being made between our two countries on cooperation for DNA testing related to the remains discovered at the Josei coal mine in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture."

On security, Lee and Takaichi agreed on the importance of bilateral cooperation and trilateral coordination with the United States to maintain regional stability, including achieving complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. There was also a mention of China. President Lee's visit drew more attention, coming a week after he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, at a time of heightened tensions between Beijing and Tokyo, following Prime Minister Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan.

----------------

President Lee emphasized the need for South Korea, China, and Japan to find as much common ground as possible and to continue communication and cooperation. Tomorrow, President Lee and Prime Minister Takaichi are scheduled to visit Horyuji Temple, one of Japan's most iconic landmarks, to further build personal rapport. President Lee will then have lunch with the local Korean community before returning home. Dami. Thank you, Yoo-jin.
