Trump says 'the dollar's doing great' while it trades at four-year low and Korean won gains footing

The U.S. dollar has been losing ground since late last week and on Tuesday the currency dropped even lower after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed NOT to be concerned about the dollar's decline. Our Kim Do-yeon touches upon his remarks and its broader ripple effects including those on the South Korean currency. The U.S. dollar is trading at near four-year lows amid rising fiscal deficits and policy volatility, fueled by growing signs that the Trump administration may actively prefer a weaker greenback to boost exports.

Reporters on Tuesday—local time—pressed President Trump ahead of his appearance in Iowa regarding the currency's rapid devaluation. Despite the dollar falling for four straight sessions, the U.S. president downplayed concerns regarding its stability. "No, I think it's great. I mean, the value of the dollar, look at the business we're doing. No, the dollar's doing great." However, that comment only further triggered depreciation. As of 1:30 PM South Korea time, the Dollar Index was trading around the 95-point-5 level. Looking at the yearly trend, the index is 9 percent lower than this time last year. It has fallen 2-point-3 percent in January alone.

Meanwhile, gold prices have surpassed 5,100 U.S. dollars an ounce. In an op-ed, the Wall Street Journal noted that this valuation—effectively pricing the dollar at less than 1/5,000th of an ounce of gold—quote—"doesn't speak well of investor confidence in the world's political leaders." This broad dollar weakness has helped the South Korean won gain some footing. On Wednesday, the won-dollar exchange market closed at 1,422-point-5 the first time closing in the 1420 range in a month.

The won had been under pressure, but is now strengthening in tandem with the Japanese yen. This correlation comes as traders brace for potential coordinated intervention by U.S. and Japanese authorities to stabilize the yen, which has rallied nearly 4 percent in recent sessions.
