President Lee arrives in the U.S. for first summit with Trump

We begin with the latest on South Korean President Lee Jae-myung's back-to-back trips. Having wrapped up his two-day visit to Japan, the South Korean leader is now in the United States. Our Presidential Office correspondent Song Yoo-jin joins us live from Washington, D.C. Yoo-jin! Eun-ji, it's just past 9 p.m. on Sunday here in D.C. President Lee Jae Myung and First Lady Kim Hea Kyung arrived in the U.S shortly before 3 PM. We're just a day away from President Lee's first face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The South Korea-U.S. summit has undoubtedly been the most anticipated diplomatic event since President Lee took office in early June. First, listen to what he told reporters about the summit aboard his flight to Washington. "In the end, I believe we will reach a practical and reasonable conclusion. But it's clear the process will be very difficult, and knowing that allows us to prepare. We'll do our utmost. Even if we can't fully meet the expectations of our people, we have a responsibility to at least ensure they are not disappointed."

Meanwhile, just like in Japan, the South Korean leader's first engagement after landing was with the local Korean community. Some 150 Korean residents and Korean Americans were invited to join the First Couple for dinner. President Lee thanked them for serving as a bridge between the two countries and pledged to build a nation they can be proud of. "I would like to express my respect and gratitude to all of you who, through tireless dedication and commitment, have elevated the standing of Koreans abroad and contributed passionately to strengthening the South Korea-U.S. alliance of prosperity and peace.

We will continue to listen closely to the diverse voices of the Korean community and expand the support you need." With that, President Lee wraps up day one of his three-day stay in the U.S. Yoo-jin, walk us through President Lee's schedule for the next two days. President Lee will start day two with a summit and working lunch with President Trump at the White House. Afterward, he is scheduled to meet with business leaders from both countries. Later, he will deliver a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, outlining South Korea's foreign policy and his vision for the ROK-U.S. alliance.

On his final day, the president will travel to Philadelphia to tour the Hanwha Philly Shipyard, recently acquired by Korea's Hanwha group. We've also heard that senior U.S. officials will accompany him. After the tour, Korea's Air Force One jet will depart Tuesday evening and return to Korea early on Thursday. A packed agenda, but of course, all eyes are on Monday's summit. Tell us what we can expect. As you just heard from President Lee, the overall sentiment from him and his aides is that this will not be an easy summit.

National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac told reporters that it would be a meeting "with challenges." "The key theme of the South Korea-U.S. summit is stabilizing issues related to trade and the economy. The focus will also be on how to modernize the alliance, and at the same time, how to open up new areas of cooperation." To support President Lee, all three of his top aides: his Chief of Staff, Chief of Policy, and National Security Adviser, are in Washington. This summit is widely seen as an early test of the Lee administration's so-called "pragmatic" diplomacy, putting national interest first. Eun-ji. Thank you, Yoo-jin.
