If you're hitting the roads for the Chuseok holiday, visiting a highway rest stop is a must. That's because over the years, they've become much more than just somewhere to take a break. Now, they're destinations in their own right, somewhere you can enjoy a wide variety of local snacks and different foods. Our Park Jun-han has this story.

During the Chuseok holidays, South Korea's annual equivalent to thanksgiving, millions of people will be on the move, either going to their hometown or coming back from it. For those traveling by car or express bus, the trip is often marked by long hours stuck in heavy traffic. As travel takes much longer than usual during holiday seasons, breaking the journey at rest stops is inevitable. This is where South Korea's unique rest stop culture comes alive, offering more than just a quick break.

With comforting, tasty food, they help people enjoy the journey and ease the burden of long hours on the road. Rest stops offer a variety of foods that could fill your belly. Among them, three are especially beloved among people in Korea when they take a break from their journey. These are Sotteok Sotteok, which are sausage and rice cake skewers, grilled potatoes, and hodu-gwaja, small spherical walnut cakes. Not only is food at South Korea's highway rest stops affordable, it actually tastes really good. Mmm, so good.

The three items' prices range anywhere between 3-thousand-500 won to 4-thousand-500 won, which is about 2-point-5 to 3-point-2 U.S. dollars. When asked about what makes South Korea's rest stops so special, visitors replied by saying, "Rest stops have a variety of foods, and it's nice to be able to rest when you're tired. I'm happy because I'm traveling with my family." "Since there are often traffic jams, we stop at rest areas quite often. It gives us a chance to get some fresh air, enjoy tasty food, and lift our mood, so I think they really help during long drives."

Rest stops are not just places to rest and eat, but also places that bring the excitement of meeting. "Rest stops serve as meeting spots where travelers can relieve fatigue and greet acquaintances with excitement. On holidays themselves or the day after, sales triple." South Korea's rest stop culture shows that holiday travel is not just about enduring long hours on the road. With a simple but delicious stop along the way, these rest stops turn holiday journeys into joyful experiences. Park Jun-han, Arirang News.
