We keep trying

simply placing a human mask
on another living being
is enough to completely change
how we feel
and how we respond.
What does that say
about the value of being human itself?
As the need to overcome human limitations
increasingly presents itself
as a global imperative,
are we truly
understanding what it means
to be human at all?

This video work originated from Huyghe’s encounter with a macaque trained to work in a Japanese restaurant, dressed in human clothing and wearing a human mask.
Filmed in the actual location, the work presents the animal performing learned gestures within a human-designed environment.
Following its release, the work prompted international discussion around animal labor, ethics, and the projection of human roles onto non-human beings.
