계단을 칠판으로 바꾸면 벌어지는 일

지난주에 손주가 편하게 그림을 그릴 수 있게 하려고, 우리 집 계단을 칠판 페인트로 칠해보았다.

수직벽이어서 서서 그리는 칠판보다 나름 참신한 아이디어다 싶었다..

손주는 계단 앞에 딱 서서 장난꾸러기 얼굴을 하며 말했다.

“할미, 위에는 비행기, 아래 칸에는 배, 중앙에는 차가 다니도록 그릴 거야!”

그리고는 길고 좁은 비행기를 그리면서 설명까지 덧붙인다. "여기 비행기 위 뚜껑은 신선한 공기가 들어가는 거야. "

그러더니 중간 계단에 뭔가를 슥슥 그려놓고는 냅다 냉동고로 달려가 AA 배터리 두 개를 들고 와서는 의기양양하게 외쳤다.

“할미 봐봐! 이건 내 전기차야!”

매끈하고 미래적인 디자인에, 연료는 AA 배터리 두 개.

손주 세계에서는 이미 가솔린 엔진은 박물관급인가 보다.

와, 손주와 나의 세대 차이는 이 계단처럼 높이의 차원이 다르네,

할미가 만들어 준 작은 변화에 손주의 넘치는 상상력이 만나 만들어진 기쁨이

나의 하루를 완전히 환하게 밝혀주었다.

I painted my staircase with chalkboard paint last week so my grandson could draw more comfortably on a flat surface instead of just on walls or small pieces of paper.

He stood there planning it all out and said, “Halmi (Grandma), I’m going to draw an airplane on the top step, the boat on the bottom, and the street with cars in the middle!”

He drew a long, narrow airplane and explained, “This part on top opens so fresh air can come in.”

Then, on one of the middle steps, he quickly sketched something, ran to the freezer to grab two AA batteries, and proudly presented it to me:

“Look, this is my electric car!”

A smooth, futuristic design—powered by AA batteries.

In his world, gas engines are already a thing of the past.

It was a sweet and humbling reminder of the generational gap, but more than that, his imagination and joyful creativity absolutely made my day.

I thought it might bring a smile to yours too.
