Salim Unit : Social Core Unit

New Logic for Next Human life

by 전하진

Just as mainframes alone could not handle humanity’s computing demands in the 1980s, megacities alone cannot sustain human life today.

When the Personal Computer (PC) appeared as a new "core unit," the digital world expanded explosively.

Now, we need a social core unit: the Salim Unit.

The Salim Unit is a basic unit of life where a community works together to secure survival (Zero Basic), internalize city functions (Urban Basic), and create cultural value (Culture Basic).

This is not just a job policy or a cash handout. It is an innovation that redesigns the very structure of survival.

Cities and Salim Units do not compete; they cooperate. The city remains a hub of culture and technology, while the Salim Unit becomes a base for survival and creation.

When networked together, society's resilience and creativity will become far greater than before.

The Salim Unit is the new core unit of civilization that can simultaneously solve the climate crisis, polarization, and technological threats.

Why We Need a New Core Unit

In the 1980s, IBM mainframes ruled the world. Experts said, "Individuals don't need computers." But Steve Jobs and Bill Gates saw a different future. The PC appeared, and the world changed.

PCs didn't eliminate mainframes. Today, we use personal devices and the cloud together. Without PCs, mainframes couldn't handle the world's computing power. The PC was the core unit that allowed the digital world to expand astronomically. Now, with AI and Edge Cloud, this structure is evolving again.

Our society faces a similar crisis. We have concentrated everything into the "mainframe" of megacities. The system is overloaded. Regions are empty, and cities are bursting. We need a social core unit to distribute the load.

Jobs Are No Longer the Answer

For decades, governments believed that "creating jobs" would save dying regions. It hasn't worked. Young people are still leaving.

In cities, there are jobs, but wages can't keep up with the cost of living. Even "good jobs" like lawyers or developers are facing instability due to AI. The International Labour Organization (ILO) predicts AI will replace many jobs by 2030. We are trapped in a structure where we must earn money just to survive. If we don't change this "Money Logic," both cities and regions will collapse.

Survival Anxiety Destroys Everything

The WHO states that loneliness and isolation increase mortality rates by 29%. Survival anxiety makes people isolated, sick, and angry. This is why young people are giving up on marriage and children.

On top of this, the Climate Crisis is threatening our safety. Water shortages, extreme weather, and food insecurity are growing. The UNEP warns we are moving from "climate crisis" to "climate breakdown."

Korean 'Salim' Culture and 'Weness'

The Korean word 'Salim' comes from the philosophy of "saving life." It is not just about housekeeping; it is a mindset that connects humans, nature, and community. It is based on 'Weness' (Uri)—the idea that I can only live if my community lives.

This spirit helped Korea overcome the IMF crisis through the "Gold Collection Movement." It values circulation over possession, care over competition, and relationships over efficiency. This Salim Logic is the key to a sustainable future.

Solving the Poly-Crisis

We must redefine 'Salim' as "the act of saving the Earth and life." By using the ESGG (Ethical Sustainable Global Good) framework, we can elevate this to a global ethical standard.

The Salim Unit is the practical tool for this. It is a "Global Recovery Center" where carbon reduction, care, and resource circulation happen daily. It transforms fragmented individuals into a "New Weness." This leads to Salim Capitalism—a system that goes beyond Money Logic

.

Redesigning the Survival Layer: The 3 Basics

The Salim Unit allows a community to solve basic survival needs together so individuals can pursue self-realization. It is a material version of Universal Basic Income (UBI).

Zero Basic (Survival Independence): Energy is self-supplied via solar and wind power. Food is grown in smart farms and community gardens. Housing and care (childcare/elderly care) are shared by the community. Result: Survival anxiety disappears.

Urban Basic (Internalizing City Functions): High-speed networks bring the city to the unit. Remote work, telemedicine, and online education make physical distance irrelevant.

Culture Basic (Creating New Value): With survival secure, humans create. We move from competition to cooperation. The records and culture created here become new economic assets.

Where Can We Build Salim Units?

Cities: Apartment complexes can install solar panels, share food, and care for each other.

Rural Villages: High self-sufficiency in food and energy, connected to the world via high-speed internet.

Universities (Salim Campus): Students work 10 hours a week for the community in exchange for free room and board. They can focus on pure learning, like the old college systems of Oxford.

Cruise Ships: A floating Salim Unit that travels the ocean, self-sufficient in energy and food, functioning as a mobile city.

Salim Units Drive Industrial Transformation

Salim Units are the perfect infrastructure for the 4th Industrial Revolution. By distributing energy and data, they lower costs and risks. They provide the power needed for AI data centers and create a testbed for new technologies like IoT and robotics.

Salim Capitalism: A New Market

"How do we make money?" In a Salim Unit, money is not the goal, but a byproduct of a fulfilling life. However, to speed up this transition, we can turn the Salim Unit into a product.

Salim Premium: The narrative of a community that saves the earth and cares for each other is a luxury product.

Trophy Assets: Super-rich individuals, companies, and governments looking for ESG solutions will invest in Salim Units.

Ethical Consumption: Products made in "Carbon Zero" Salim villages will command higher prices.

A Solution for the Global South

Developing nations in Africa and Asia cannot follow the old, dirty path of industrialization. Salim Units offer a "leapfrog" opportunity. With small investments in solar power and digital connectivity, villages can become self-reliant without massive national grids. Korea can export this "Civilization Package" to the world.

We Must Start Now

This is not a distant utopia. We can start Pilot Projects today. If we test this in one village, one university, and one apartment complex for 3 years, the results will speak for themselves. Young people will flock to places where they don't have to worry about survival.

Conclusion: Upgrading Civilization’s OS

We need to upgrade our operating system from "Money Logic" (Dominance, Growth, Competition) to "Salim Logic" (Salim, Abundance, Ethics).

Salim Units do not destroy cities; they evolve with them. Cities become hubs of culture; Salim Units become bases of life. Korea, having experienced both rapid growth and its side effects, is the perfect place to lead this change.

Let’s take the first step. One village, one ship, one campus. In three years, the world will see a new possibility.

Benefits of the Salim Unit:

Stability: Frees individuals from survival anxiety.

Energy: Provides distributed power for the AI era.

Food Security: strengthens national resilience.

Innovation: Encourages technology for "Salim" rather than just profit.

This is the path to a sustainable, abundant, and ethical future.
