I heard about a big hospital developed by a Korean doctor. The name is Hyundai Hospital in Mongolia. I’ve never been there before, but I hope someday I will have a chance to visit.

Yesterday, there was a special seminar at Hyundai Hospital. I gave my name to the staff member in charge of attendance, and I went to the hospital right after my dermatology practice. It took about an hour to get there, and even though there was a traffic jam, I was so happy because I could attend a good seminar and meet a senior doctor, Dr. Woo Jung Sim.

Even though he is not a native English speaker, he explained “Diseases of the Thyroid Gland from a Surgeon’s Perspective” in a very understandable way. He was already aware of the audience’s level, so he started by explaining the anatomy of the thyroid and surrounding muscles, as well as the basic mechanisms of thyroid function. Then he introduced specific surgeries required for patients, which was very interesting.

I learned about the delicate considerations surgeons must take into account during operations to avoid damaging arteries and the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The thyroid gland is located in a very narrow space in the neck, but it is surrounded by many small yet very important organs and tissues. He even told us about a case of death on the operating table caused by arterial rupture during thyroidectomy.

After the lecture, I met him and said hello. He was very humble and polite. On my way home from the hospital, it took almost two hours because of traffic, but I kept thinking about the contents of the lecture. I’m not particularly interested in becoming a surgeon yet, but I really felt that he was awesome!
