The Super Heavy Booster is the first stage of the Starship launch vehicle, designed by SpaceX to be fully reusable and incredibly powerful.

It’s built to lift the Starship spacecraft into orbit and beyond, with the ultimate goal of enabling missions to the Moon, Mars, and even point-to-point travel on Earth.

Standing about 71 meters (233 feet) tall and 9 meters (30 feet) wide, it’s powered by 33 Raptor engines that run on liquid methane and liquid oxygen.

These engines together generate a monstrous amount of thrust—up to around 17 million pounds at full capacity, making it the most powerful rocket booster ever built.

The design is all about reusability. After launching, Super Heavy separates from the Starship upper stage and returns to Earth, where SpaceX aims to catch it mid-air using the “chopstick” arms of its launch tower (nicknamed Mechazilla) at Starbase in South Texas.

This catch maneuver is a game-changer—it cuts down turnaround time and costs by skipping the need for a traditional landing pad or ocean splashdown.

They pulled this off successfully for the first time on the fifth Starship test flight in October 2024, and again on the seventh flight in January 2025, though that mission lost the upper stage due to a fire.

The booster’s made of stainless steel, stacked from cylinders about 1.8 meters high, with internal tanks for 3,400 metric tons of propellant (mostly liquid oxygen, with methane in a smaller tank). It’s evolved over years of prototypes—Booster 1 was a pathfinder in 2021, and by Booster 7 in 2023, they were static-firing 31 engines at once. The latest versions, like Booster 14 used in Flight 7, even reuse engines from earlier flights, showing SpaceX is pushing hard for reliability and cost-efficiency.
