Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a premier central university in India dedicated to maritime education, training, and research. Established on November 14, 2008, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, IMU serves as the national hub for maritime studies, encompassing marine engineering, nautical science, port management, and logistics.

Campuses
IMU operates six regional campuses across India: 
• Chennai (Headquarters): Formerly the National Maritime Academy, offering programs like B.Sc. in Nautical Science, B.Tech. in Marine Engineering, MBA in Port and Shipping Management, and MBA in International Transportation and Logistics Management. 
• Kolkata: Previously the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), specializing in B.Tech. in Marine Engineering, M.Tech. in Marine Technology, and MBA in Port Management. 
• Navi Mumbai: Known as Training Ship Chanakya, focusing on B.Sc. in Nautical Science. 
• Mumbai Port: Incorporates the legacy of MERI Mumbai and LBS CAMSAR, offering various maritime programs. 
• Visakhapatnam: Evolved from the National Ship Design and Research Centre, emphasizing ship design and maritime technology. 
• Kochi: Located on Willingdon Island, offering programs in nautical science and maritime studies.

IMU boasts strong placement records, with major shipping and logistics companies recruiting graduates. Prominent recruiters include Essar, Fleet Management Limited, Maersk, Chevron, and Wilhelmsen.
The Mumbai campus, for instance, has reported placement rates as high as 95%, with packages ranging from ₹3 LPA to ₹6 LPA.
