“Kurdistan” generally refers to a cultural and geographical region where the Kurdish people form a prominent majority.

It spans across several modern-day countries, primarily:

• Turkey (southeastern region, often referred to as Northern Kurdistan)

• Iraq (the Kurdistan Region, which has recognized autonomy and its own government)

• Iran (northwestern region, known as Eastern Kurdistan or Rojhilat)

• Syria (northeastern area, often called Rojava or Western Kurdistan)

Key Points:

• Kurdish People: An ethnic group with their own language (main dialects include Kurmanji, Sorani, and others), culture, and long-standing aspirations for self-determination.

• Iraqi Kurdistan: The most politically advanced part of Kurdistan, with a recognized autonomous government (KRG – Kurdistan Regional Government), its own parliament, and military forces (Peshmerga).

• Political Situation: The question of Kurdish independence and autonomy has been a source of conflict in the region for decades.

Kurdish movements have been active in all four countries, often facing political and military opposition.
