The University of Costa Rica (Universidad de Costa Rica, UCR) is the oldest and most prestigious public university in Costa Rica, established on August 26, 1940.
Its origins trace back to the University of Santo Tomás, founded in 1843 and closed in 1888. UCR was created by reuniting several independent professional schools during the reformist administration of President Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia.

Academic Excellence
UCR is recognized as the top university in Central America and the Caribbean. It ranks 497th globally in the 2025 QS World University Rankings.
The university contributes to 60% of Central America’s scientific production and 70% of Costa Rica’s research output.  
Campuses and Facilities
Beyond its main campus, UCR operates several regional campuses to promote accessible education: 
• Western Regional Campus: San Ramón and Tacares.
• Atlantic Regional Campus: Turrialba, Paraíso, and Guápiles.
• Guanacaste Regional Campus: Liberia and Santa Cruz.
• Caribbean Regional Campus: Limón and Siquirres.
• Pacific Regional Campus: Puntarenas.
• South Regional Campus: Golfito.
• Alajuela Interuniversity Campus: Collaborative space with other public universities.   
The main campus features extensive sports facilities, including gyms, swimming pools, and arenas for various sports. It also houses two biological reserves and a botanical garden, making it a destination for both education and tourism.

UCR is a hub for research and social initiatives: 
• Research: Hosts 46 research institutes and centers, contributing significantly to regional scientific advancements.
• Social Action: Engages in over 700 social action projects, aiming to improve community well-being.
• International Collaboration: Maintains 284 international agreements to foster global academic exchange.
