Yu Youren (于右任, 1879–1964) was a prominent Chinese calligrapher, politician, revolutionary, and scholar.


He is particularly well known for his influential work in calligraphy and for his significant role in the Republic of China’s early political and cultural development.

Political & Historical Role

• Yu Youren was an early member of Sun Yat-sen’s Tongmenghui, which sought to overthrow the Qing Dynasty.

• After the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, he held multiple posts in the Republic of China.

• He became a senior figure in the Kuomintang (KMT) and a close associate of Sun Yat-sen and later Chiang Kai-shek.

• He served as the President of the Control Yuan (a key oversight organ of the ROC government) from 1938 until his death in 1964.



Calligraphy & Cultural Contributions


Yu Youren is widely regarded as one of the greatest Chinese calligraphers of the 20th century, particularly noted for:

• His mastery of the cursive script (草书), especially zhangcao (章草), a traditional early cursive form.

• Revitalizing classical calligraphy while also giving it a modern aesthetic.

• Teaching and promoting calligraphy education.

• Founding the Xiling Society of Seal Arts, and his calligraphy remains widely studied and emulated today.

• He left behind numerous poems, essays, and calligraphy works.

• His writings and calligraphy are featured in Taiwanese textbooks, museums, and public buildings.

• He is revered in Taiwan as a symbol of traditional Chinese culture and nationalist ideals.

• Many of his works are displayed in the National Palace Museum and other cultural institutions.




Death and Honors

• He died in 1964 in Taipei, and his memorial is located in Yangmingshan.

• Posthumously honored by the ROC government for his cultural and political contributions.
