The SPYDER-SR (Surface-to-air Python and Derby – Short Range) is an Israeli mobile air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
#RafaelAdvancedDefenseSystems
Designed for rapid response and high mobility, it provides protection against a variety of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and precision-guided munitions.
Key Features and Capabilities
• Missile Armament:
The system utilizes Python-5 and Derby missiles, both of which are adapted from air-to-air configurations for surface-to-air use.
The Python-5 employs infrared homing and electro-optical imaging guidance, while the Derby uses active radar homing.
• Engagement Range and Altitude: The SPYDER-SR can engage targets at distances ranging from less than 1 km up to 15 km, and at altitudes from 20 meters to 9,000 meters.
• Rapid Reaction Time: The system boasts a quick reaction capability, with the ability to launch missiles within five seconds of target confirmation.
• 360° Engagement Capability: The launcher can engage targets in all directions, providing comprehensive coverage against incoming threats.
• Mobility: Mounted on various truck platforms, including Tatra, Mercedes-Benz, MAN, Scania, and Dongfeng, the SPYDER-SR is designed for rapid deployment and repositioning.
System Components
• Missile Firing Unit (MFU): Each launcher vehicle carries four ready-to-fire missiles, which can be a mix of Python-5 and Derby types.
• Radar Systems: The SPYDER-SR is typically equipped with the EL/M-2106 ATAR radar for target detection and tracking. However, some operators, like the Czech Republic, have integrated the more advanced ELM-2084 MMR radar, enhancing detection capabilities and interoperability within NATO forces.
• Command and Control Unit: A central command unit coordinates the operation of multiple launchers, managing target acquisition and engagement decisions.
Global Deployment
The SPYDER-SR system has been adopted by several countries seeking to bolster their short-range air defense capabilities.
Notably, the Czech Republic recently showcased its SPYDER-SR systems equipped with ELM-2084 MMR radars at the IDET 2025 defense exhibition, highlighting their role in modernizing national air defense strategies.
Variants and Upgrades
Beyond the SPYDER-SR, the SPYDER family includes medium and long-range variants:
• SPYDER-MR (Medium Range): Offers extended engagement ranges up to 35 km and altitudes up to 16 km, utilizing vertical launch capabilities and advanced radar systems.
• SPYDER-LR (Long Range): Designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles and other long-range threats, with enhanced interception capabilities.
• SPYDER All-in-One (AiO): A recent configuration that integrates the launcher, radar, and command systems onto a single platform, providing a compact and rapidly deployable solution for modern battlefields.
