The U.S. Army uniforms are categorized into several types, each serving a different purpose depending on the setting—combat, service, formal, or physical training.


Here’s a breakdown of the main types as of 2025:




1. Army Combat Uniform (ACU)

• Use: Everyday field and deployment wear.

• Camouflage: Currently issued in Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP).

• Components:

• OCP patterned jacket and trousers

• Tan t-shirt

• Coyote brown boots

• Patrol cap or helmet




2. Army Service Uniform (ASU)

• Use: Ceremonial, formal events, and some office environments.

• Colors: Traditional dark blue jacket and trousers with light blue pants stripe (enlisted) or gold (officers).

• Components:

• Dress jacket (dark blue)

• White long-sleeved shirt

• Necktie or neck tab

• Blue trousers or skirt

• Black shoes


The Army is phasing in the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) to replace the ASU for most formal and office duties.



3. Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) (“Pinks and Greens”)

• Use: Official duty and formal occasions.

• Inspired by: WWII-era service uniforms.

• Components:

• Olive drab coat and trousers (“pinks” due to a subtle pinkish hue)

• Khaki shirt and tie

• Brown leather shoes

• Garrison or service cap



4. Physical Fitness Uniform (IPFU/APFU)

• Use: Physical training (PT).

• Design: Black and gold, reflective lettering.

• Components:

• Moisture-wicking t-shirt

• Shorts and/or running pants

• Reflective jacket (for cold or dark conditions)

• Running shoes



5. Dress and Mess Uniforms

• Use: Formal events like balls or military weddings.

• Types:

• Blue Mess Uniform (similar to a tuxedo)

• White Mess Uniform (summer version, for officers)



6. Specialty Uniforms

• Worn by select units like:

• Army Rangers – may wear tan berets

• Airborne – maroon berets

• Special Forces – green berets

• Drill Sergeants – campaign hats

• Honor Guard – ceremonial modifications
