International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on June 21 to promote the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga.
The date was chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, which holds special significance in yoga traditions.
The United Nations officially recognized this day in 2014, following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the first celebration took place on June 21, 2015 .  
In 2025, International Yoga Day will be observed on Saturday, June 21. The theme for this year, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” emphasizes yoga’s role in promoting holistic health and well-being .  
Globally, various events are planned to mark the occasion. In India, the state of Andhra Pradesh has launched a month-long ‘Yogandhra’ campaign, with 1.86 crore citizens registering within the first two weeks.
The main celebration is planned in Visakhapatnam, aiming for five lakh participants at a single event on the Visakhapatnam-Bheemili beach stretch, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend .  
In Uttar Pradesh, over 4,000 locations will host mass yoga practice sessions as part of a nationwide effort involving 100,000 sites.
The state government has mandated all government hospitals and health facilities to celebrate International Yoga Day, focusing on the 2025 theme .  
Educational institutions are also participating. For instance, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) BHU is organizing an 11-day yoga camp from June 11, featuring daily yoga sessions and other activities . 
Internationally, the United Nations will host an event at its headquarters in New York on June 20, 2025, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. EDT, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN .
