Sir J. J. School of Art (formally the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art) is Mumbai’s oldest and one of India’s most prestigious art institutions:



History & Architecture

• Founded in March 1857, with funds donated by philanthropist Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy  .

• Initially based in Elphinstone Institution; shifted to its own iconic neo‑Gothic building in 1878, designed by George Twigge Molecey  .

• The campus is a Grade II heritage site, with restorations completed in the early 2000s  .

• Lockwood Kipling—father of Rudyard Kipling—was its first dean and led critical ateliers in decorative arts; Rudyard was born here in 1865  .



Departments & Degree Programs


Offers a robust range of disciplines across Undergraduate (B.F.A, B.Arch, B.Des) and Postgraduate (M.F.A, M.Arch, M.Des) programs including:

• Drawing & Painting

• Sculpture & Modelling

• Ceramics, Metal Work, Textiles

• Interior Decoration

• Architecture (via Sir J. J. College of Architecture, spun off in 1952)

• Applied Art emerged as its own institute in 1961   .


Curricula integrate studio work, research, electives, and culminate in capstone projects, aligning with the National Education Policy  .
