Here’s a refreshed overview of Air India under Tata Group ownership:




Return to the Tata Fold


In October 2021, Tata Sons won a ₹180 billion (~$2.4 billion) bid to acquire Air India, taking over its liabilities and marking the airline’s return to its pre‑nationalization roots .


The acquisition also brought Air India Express and AISATS into the Tata portfolio, with the handover formally completed on 27 January 2022 .




Rebuilding & Expansion


Since taking control, Tata has overseen a 41% increase in flights, launched 24 new international routes, and 12 domestic ones .


A massive fleet overhaul is underway: 210 Airbus A320neos and 40 A350s are on order, making for a total of 250 aircraft from Airbus alone .

Strategic Consolidation


Tata merged various airline ventures:

Vistara (Tata–Singapore Airlines JV) merged into Air India, creating India’s largest international carrier with a ~218‑plane fleet and SIA holding a 25.1% stake post-merger in Nov 2024 .


AirAsia India was folded into Air India Express, forming a single low-cost subsidiary .




Modernization & Culture Shift


Tata launched Vihaan.ai, a transformation roadmap focused on network, fleet, customer experience, tech upgrades, safety, and sustainability .


Under CEO Campbell Wilson, the airline:

Overhauled workforce: average age dropped from 54 to 34, with 5,000 hires in 18 months  .


Introduced performance-focused culture, including new training, clearer roles, and incentives .




New Branding & Livery


In August 2023, Air India unveiled a striking new logo and livery designed by FutureBrand:


Iconic window motif moved to the tail.

New palette: deeper red, aubergine, and gold underbelly.

First A350 delivered in December 2023, with full fleet refresh aimed by end‑2026 .

Recent Tragedy & Response


On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight AI‑171, a Boeing 787, tragically crashed in Ahmedabad—the worst aviation disaster in India in decades .

Chairman N Chandrasekaran emphasized the “clean engine history”, newly installed engines, and fully serviced crew .


Interim measures included a 15% cut in wide-body flights, grounding aircraft for inspections, a crash compensation trust, and proactive communication with loyalty members .
