“사티아그라하(Satyagraha)”는 마하트마 간디가 처음 제창한 비폭력 저항 운동철학입니다.
산스크리트어로 ‘진리(Satya)를 굳게(Agraha) 붙드는 힘’, 즉 **‘진리의 힘(truth‑force)’**을 뜻하며, 간디는 이를 단순한 ‘수동적 저항’이 아니라 ‘사랑과 비폭력에 기반한 능동적 저항’이라고 정의했습니다 .

진리와 비폭력 : 내부적으로 진리에 대한 무조건적인 헌신과 비폭력을 지향
자기희생 : 저항하는 이가 스스로 고통을 감수하며, 상대에게 폭력이 아닌 양심의 문제로 다가감
비밀 없는 저항 : 저항 의도를 상대에게 미리 알리며, 은밀한 수단을 거부

사티아그라하의 현대적 의미
1. 윤리적 행동 원칙 – 정치·사회 문제에서 폭력이 아닌 양심과 진리의 힘을 지향.
2. 자기수련과 내적 강인함 – 저항은 단순 외적 행동이 아니라 내적으로 진리를 굳게 유지하는 삶.
3. 갈등 해결의 모델 – 상대를 공격하지 않고 화해와 공동선 추구.

Only a few Indians have heard about Batak Mian, the brave cook from Bihar who not only saved Mahatma Gandhi's life during the Champaran Satyagraha but also paid a heavy price for it. His name may not be etched in every history book, but his courage deserves a chapter of its own.
In 1917, Gandhi visited Bihar to investigate the plight of indigo farmers oppressed by British planters. Erwin, a cruel English plantation manager, saw this as a threat and hatched a sinister plot. He instructed Batak Mian, Gandhi's cook, to poison the Mahatma's milk.
Batak Mian refused the heinous order, choosing loyalty to truth over obedience to authority. However, his bravery came at a heavy cost. Erwin, enraged by his defiance, unleashed a torrent of brutality, which extended even to his family, who had not yet recovered from it.
