The Arab-Israeli War refers to a series of military conflicts between the State of Israel and various Arab states or coalitions, primarily over land, Palestinian sovereignty, and regional influence.


These wars have shaped modern Middle Eastern geopolitics. Below is an overview of the major Arab-Israeli wars:




Major Arab-Israeli Wars (1948–present)


1. 1948 Arab–Israeli War (First Arab-Israeli War, “Nakba”)

• Date: 1948–1949

• Trigger: Israel’s declaration of independence (May 14, 1948)

• Belligerents: Israel vs. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon + Palestinian irregulars

• Result:

• Israel secured more territory than UN Partition Plan allocated

• ~750,000 Palestinians displaced (known as the Nakba, or catastrophe)

• Jordan annexed the West Bank; Egypt took control of Gaza




2. 1956 Suez Crisis (Second Arab-Israeli War)


• Date: October–November 1956

• Trigger: Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal; Israel, UK, and France launched a coordinated attack

Belligerents: Israel + UK + France vs. Egypt

• Result:

• Egypt retained the canal but lost the Sinai briefly

Israel withdrew under U.S. and Soviet pressure

UNEF (UN peacekeepers) deployed in Sinai




3. 1967 Six-Day War


• Date: June 5–10, 1967

• Trigger: Egyptian troop mobilization in Sinai, closure of the Straits of Tiran

Belligerents: Israel vs. Egypt, Syria, Jordan

• Result:

• Israel captured Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights

• Massive strategic victory for Israel

• Start of Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories




4. 1973 Yom Kippur War (October War)


• Date: October 6–25, 1973

Trigger: Surprise attack by Egypt and Syria on Jewish holy day

• Belligerents: Egypt and Syria vs. Israel

• Result:

• Initial Arab gains, followed by Israeli counteroffensive

U.S. airlift to Israel; USSR supported Egypt/Syria

Led to 1978 Camp David Accords and peace treaty with Egypt




5. 1982 Lebanon War

• Date: June 1982–1985 (occupation continued to 2000)

Trigger: PLO attacks from southern Lebanon

• Belligerents: Israel vs. PLO, later Hezbollah and Syria

• Result:

• PLO expelled from Beirut

• Israel occupied southern Lebanon

• Rise of Hezbollah as a major resistance movement




6. 2006 Lebanon War

• Date: July–August 2006

• Trigger: Hezbollah’s cross-border raid and kidnapping of Israeli soldiers

• Belligerents: Israel vs. Hezbollah (supported by Syria, Iran)

• Result:

• Heavy casualties on both sides

• Widespread destruction in Lebanon

• UN-brokered ceasefire (UNSCR 1701)
