Recent Earthquakes & Impact
Initial quake: On August 31, 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, particularly Kunar Province (Nurgal District), causing widespread devastation—over 2,200 deaths, nearly 4,000 injuries, and thousands of destroyed or damaged homes.
Aftershocks: Multiple aftershocks followed, including a notably strong magnitude 6.2 quake on September 4.
These additional tremors compounded the destruction and complicated emergency relief efforts.
Continued seismic activity: In the span of 24 hours, several more earthquakes struck, including magnitudes 4.5, 4.9, 5.2, 4.6, and a 4.1—a sign of persistent seismic instability.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Casualties & destruction: The current death toll stands at around 2,205, with over 3,600 injured. Approximately 6,700 homes were destroyed, especially in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.
Challenges to rescue: The mountainous terrain, landslides, blocked roads, and continuing tremors have severely hampered rescue operations. Many communities remain inaccessible.
Refugee influx: The crisis is exacerbated by an influx of deportees from Pakistan and Iran, which strains already fragile resources and infrastructure.
Health risks: Overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and limited medical capacity risk triggering disease outbreaks.
The WHO has warned of a looming health crisis and called for at least $4 million in funding to support relief.
Aid shortages: Despite the UN allocating around $10 million for emergency response, global donations remain insufficient. Aid agencies warn they only have enough supplies to last a few weeks.
What You Can Do — How to Help
Several organizations are mobilizing emergency relief. Some avenues to consider:
TIME highlights groups like Americares offering health services, and others coordinating with local partners in Afghanistan.
International agencies such as the UN, Red Crescent, Save the Children, Médecins Sans Frontières, and others are coordinating rescue and medical support.
If you’re looking to donate or help:
1. Choose reputable humanitarian organizations with a history of disaster response.
2. Prefer donations in cash, which are often more efficient for distributing aid—think tents, medicine, clean water, and shelter.
3. Check if your country’s government or NGOs have matching donation programs, which can double your impact.
4. Share verified information with your network—awareness raises more support.
