A Friend, figures, sheep &

grownups

by 애니마리아

"If I try to describe him here, it is to make sure that I shall not forget him. To forget a friend is sad. Not everyone has had a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like the grown-ups who are no longer interested in anything but figures..." /from Little Prince p. 18

Since when have we started forgetting friends? Is it true that adults who are no longer interested in anything other than figures? What if a child likes numbers, math, or calculation itself? Does it indicate the child already become a adult without any friends such as a little prince?

However, we adults know that we should not accept this concept literally but figure out what's beneath it, between the lines. Although it is kind of sad and suffocating to remember figures at times, we need to think about money to keep living, family, have relationships with somebody, do things we like. Even some childen can't get away from figures to spend their pocket money effectively and wisely nowadays.

"In certain more important details I shall make mistakes, also. But that is something that will not be my fault. My friend never explained anything to me. He thought, perhaps, that I was like himself. But, I, alas, do not know how to see sheep through the walls of boxes. Perhaps I am a little like the grown-ups. I have had to grow old."

p. 19/<THE LITTLE PRINCE>

When we are much younger, like kids, we're so eager to be adults cause we think we can do anything like adults. Once we become adults, we enjoy being adults and think we can do anything and sometimes it becomes true and some people dare to try what they'd imagined but it gets to boring and they feel withering so often. At last they miss the moments they were younger, much younger and hope to go back the moments.

Time flies regardless of our intentions to grow old or not and it is obviously true that we forget how to see inside the box whatever it contains, whatever we imagined.

The pilot said that he had to grow old, but he could go back the to past and was able to see the box of the sheep through the little prince. That's one of the reasons we keep talking and praising this book, this character over and over again.

Therefore I hope I can see the sky, breathe and think or imagine what there are, what I imagine or did at least just a moment today as an adult who really wanted to grow old as quickly as possible and miss my imagination as a child.
