하루에 조금씩 브렌다와 함께 읽는 Alice in Wonderland

    There were doors all round the hall, but they were all locked; and when Alice had been all the way down one side and up the other, trying every door, she walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to get out again.

    Suddenly she came upon a little three-legged table, all made of solid glass: there was nothing on it but a tiny golden key, and Alice's first idea was that this might belong to one of the doors of the hall; but, alas! either the locks were too large, or the key was too small, but at any rate it would not open any of them. However, on the second time round, she came upon a low curtain she had not noticed before, and behind it was a little door about fifteen inches high: she tried the little golden key in the lock, and to her great delight it fitted!

 홀 주변 여기저기에는 문들이 있었지만 모두 잠겨있었다. 앨리스는 한쪽 면에서 반대편까지 각각의 모든 문들을 살피고는(all the way끝까지, down one side and up the other 한쪽 아래에서 다른 위까지) 그녀가 다시 나가기 위해서는 어떻게 해야하는지 곰곰히 생각하며(wondering은 분사형으로 궁금해하며라는 뜻) 가운데로 슬프게 걸었다.  

    갑자기 그녀는 모두 단단한 유리 재질로 만들어진, 작고 다리가 세개인 테이블로 다가갔다. 거기에는 작은 황금으로 된 열쇠 외에 아무 것도 없었다(주설서에 따르면, 빅토리안 시대에 금으로 된 열쇠는 신비스러운 문을 여는 물건이라는 판타지가 있었다. 당시 황금 열쇠가 천국의 문을 여는 마법의 열쇠로 판타지 문학에 등장한다). 앨리스가 첫번째로 떠올린 생각은 이것이 홀에 있는 문들 중 하나에 속한 것일지도 모른다는 거다(might 불확실한 추측, belong to~에 속하다). 그러나, 낭패였다(alas 감탄사로 슬픔이나 유감을 나타내는 소리. 문어체). 자물쇠가 너무 크거나, 열쇠가 너무 작아(either ~or~양자택일의, 이것이거나 저것이거나) 어찌되었든(at any rate) 이 열쇠는 어느 문도 열지 못했다. 그러나, 두번째 시도에서, 그녀는 이전에 알아채지 못했던 낮게 드리워진 커튼으로 다가갔는데, 그 뒤에 15인치(38.1cm) 높이 정도(about)되는 작은 문이 있었다. 그녀는 이 자물쇠에 작은 황금열쇠를 넣어 돌렸는데, 너무 기쁘게도(to her great delight) 딱 맞았다!
