Atomic Habits -
Pio's Little Piece of Ice
At the edge of the frozen South Pole, where cold winds blew day and night, there lived a little penguin named Pio.
Pio was smaller than the others, and slower too. While his friends swam far and fast to catch fish, Pio could barely swim ten meters before running out of breath.
One day, as Pio looked out at the ocean, he whispered to himself,
“I wish I could swim far one day… like the others. But I don’t think I can.”
Suddenly, a large shadow appeared behind him. It was Nunu, a giant polar bear who looked scary at first, but was kind and gentle inside.
Nunu sat next to Pio and asked softly,
“What’s with the sigh, little one?”
“I’m not good at swimming,” Pio said sadly. “Even a few meters is too hard.”
Nunu looked out over the sea and said,
“Even the biggest iceberg starts with one small piece. Try swimming just five meters every day. It’s not about going far, but about going every day.”
Pio thought about Nunu’s words. From the next morning on, he made a promise to himself:
“I’ll swim five meters every day. No matter what.”
It wasn’t easy at first. The water was cold, and his body felt heavy.
Some days, his friends laughed.
“That’s not swimming! I could slide farther just flapping!”
But Pio smiled and kept swimming.
He had made a promise—to himself.
Days passed. Then weeks. Pio started swimming ten, then twenty, then thirty meters.
He didn’t even notice how strong he had become.
“Wow, Pio!” his friends said.
But Pio just shrugged. “I just swim a little every day.”
Then one morning, something happened.
A baby penguin named Toto wandered onto thin ice and suddenly fell into the icy water.
The others were too afraid to help—
The ice was cracking, and the water was deep.
Without hesitating, Pio stepped forward.
“I’ll go.”
No one stopped him. No one believed Pio could do it.
But Pio swam with calm and steady strokes. He had done this every day.
He reached Toto and pushed him gently back onto safe ice.
Everyone cheered.
That evening, Pio sat beside Nunu again.
“I didn’t think my five meters a day would help me save someone,” Pio said quietly.
Nunu smiled and replied,
“That little habit turned you into a hero. A little every day… is the strongest kind of power.”
Pio smiled as he looked out over the sea.
That night, the ocean sparkled brighter than usual—
just like Pio’s heart.
