I love my routine

To my children

by 고동운 Don Ko

I like the routine. I like to repeat same routine each day, each week, and each season. I like to go to the same restaurant and order same food. My wife and kids think I am boring. But it is my safe zone and I like it there. I think it has everything to do with my disability.

With my disability, paraplegic, it takes some time to get used to the new surroundings. Once I get used to the height of the bed, angle of the sink, and slope of the walkway, I do not want to change them.

I have lived in the same neighborhood over 30 years, worked for the same employer, State Fund, for 30 years before I retired.

I never liked to change my desks. For various reasons, I hadto move to different desks, floors, and offices. I hated every one of those changes.

When I got promoted to Claims Operational Manager, they offered me a bigger office on 6th floor. I gave it to a manager who worked for me and kept my old small office on 2nd floor.

I go to the same gas station, mechanic, grocery stores, restaurants, and hotels. Naturally, I form a long term relationship with people there. Even though I do not have a large circle of friends, I cherish each one of the relationship.

It is not easy for me to make new friends and form relationship. But once I connect with a person, I do not let it go easily. Over the years, these few relationships have paid off.

I know I probably miss out a lot by not trying new things. People say ‘you only live once.’ That’s so true. I found the beauty of the familiarity. It’s like listening to your favorite song over and over. I know what comes next, but it still surprises me and makes me happy. It is comfortable and safe. At my age now, that’s important, too.
