Six Paths to the Truth

Sherlockian Way of Thinking

by 박승룡

Holmes’s genius lies not merely in knowing how to think, but in choosing how best to think for each problem at hand. From his repertoire, six methods emerge as his most trusted instruments: deduction, induction, abduction, the hypothetico-deductive method, retroduction, and elimination.

Deduction begins with a general principle while Induction climbs the other way

Deduction begins with a general principle and draws it down to a specific, irrefutable conclusion. A certain type of mud found only in northern London, when seen on a suspect’s boots, becomes proof of his recent travels.

Induction climbs the other way—from particular facts to a general rule. If, in case after case, a dog fails to bark when an intruder enters, the pattern speaks: the intruder is no stranger.

Abduction is the art of the best guess: the most plausible explanation for a puzzling fact. A victim found slumped over an unfinished letter beside a cold lamp? The likeliest story—he was struck down mid-sentence.

The hypothetico-deductive method starts with a guess, predicts its consequences, and tests them against reality. “If the intruder was an acquaintance,” Holmes reasons, “then the dog would not have barked.” Observation confirms it—the silence of the dog speaks volumes.

Retroduction is reasoning in reverse, tracing a known outcome back to its hidden causes. A locked-room death, with no sign of forced entry, tells Holmes that the killer was already inside before the bolts were drawn.

Holmes’s brilliance is not in wielding these methods separately, but in weaving them together.

And finally, the method of elimination, distilled in Holmes’s most famous maxim: “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

Holmes’s brilliance is not in wielding these methods separately, but in weaving them together—switching from one to another as the case evolves, each strand strengthening the whole. It is this fluid dance of logic, observation, and creativity that makes him not only the greatest of fictional detectives, but also a timeless master of the reasoning arts.In the next part of this series, we will follow Holmes into some of his most celebrated cases, watching as these methods—used alone, in tandem, and in unexpected ways—lead unerringly to the truth.
