animus

1820, "temper" (usually in a hostile sense), from Latin animus "rational soul, mind, life, mental powers, consciousness, sensibility; courage, desire," related to anima "living being, soul, mind, disposition, passion, courage, anger, spirit, feeling," from PIE root *ane- "to breathe."

animus는 단어에서 주로 anim으로 쓰인다.

animadvert : 비난하는. anim(mind) + ad(to) + vert(turn), 마음이 돌아섰으니 좋은 말 할 일이 없다. vert 어근도 영어 단어에서 많이 쓰인다. 현기증 vertigo도 같은 어근.

unanimous : 만장일치. un은 not의 의미도 있지만 uni/uno로 one이라는 뜻도 있다. un(one) + anim(mind) +ous(adj 접미사), 마음이 하나로 뭉쳐지니 만장일치라는 뜻.

magnanim0us : 관대한. mag는 great 뜻으로 mag, mega, magn 등의 형태로 쓰인다. magn(great) + anim(mind)+ous 마음이 크니 관대한 이라는 뜻이 된다.

참고로 흔히 애니메이션이라고 하는 만화영화가 영어로 animation인데 위의 anim이다. mind는 살아있는 존재만이 가질 수 있는 것이라 living being이라는 의미도 있다. 그래서 animate 하면 ‘활기를 불어넣다, 만화영화로 만들다, 살아있는’이라는 의미가 되고, 명사형이 animation이다.
