FRANCIS BACON

프란시스 베이컨은 아일랜드 더블린에서 태어났다. 베이컨은 강렬하거나 소박한 인물화를 통해 화가로서 엄청난 성공을 거두었다. 피카소의 영향과 근대 미술작가들에게 영향을 많이 받았지만, 자신만의 독창적인 화풍을 구사했다. 특히 고립된 느낌을 주는 구도에서 인물을 역동적이고 왜곡된 형태로 주로 표현했다. 베이컨의 작품들은 독특한 형태와 기법이 특징이며, 개인적인 삶까지 반영하고 있다.

그는 대부분의 삶을 런던에서 보냈다. 정식 미술교육을 받은 적이 없었다. 가구 디자이너로 활동하는 한편, 입체주의와 초현실주의 그림을 그렸고, '십자가 책형을 위한 세 개의 습작 Three studies for Figures at the Base of a, Cucifixion'으로 진정한 화가로 성장했다. 십자가 책형과 그리스 신화 속 복수의 세 여신을 참고해 삼면화(트리피크) 형식으로 나타냈다.

그의 화풍은 밝은 색채에서 음울한 분위기로, 다시 밝게 변했으나 그림 속 인물은 여전히 독특하다. 그러면서 특유의 굴곡진 복잡한 화법에 스펀지나 헝겊으로 뭉개는 기법으로 그림은 더욱 강렬한 에너지를 발산한다.

베이컨의 그림에서 가장 독특한 인물 형태는 주로 여성들로, 인물의 머리를 조각적인 형태로 강렬하게 표현했다. 1960년 대 중반 이후 가장 눈여겨볼 작품은 연인이었던 조지 다이어를 그린 그림들이다. 폐쇄적인 공간에 일렉트릭 컬러(반짝거리는 선명한 색)로 표현된 그림에서 다이어는 벌거벗은 상태로 다양한 자세를 취하고 있는데, 성적인 욕구, 절망 등 여러 감정을 뒤틀린 형태로 나타낸다. 1971년 다이어가 자살한 후에 그림 작품들 역시 이러한 과정을 통해 완성되었다. '세 형상과 초상화 Three Figures and a portait, 1975'에는 다이어와 복수의 여신이 등장한다. 특히 이 복수의 여신은 '십자가 책형을 위한 세 개의 습작'의 주제를 반복해 표현한 것이다.
