예레미아는 살해의 위협 속에서도 주의 말씀을 전한다. ‘예루살렘이 바빌론에 의해 멸망한다고..’ 그 이유는 ‘주와의 약속을 깨고 이방신을 섬겼기 때문이다’라고 말한다.
그런데 구체적인 이방신을 섬긴 사유는 ‘선량한 이웃을 괴롭히고, 외국인을 차별하고, 사회적 약자를 핍박하고, 무고한 사람을 벌 준 정의롭지 못한 사회와, 노동의 댓가를 제대로 치르지 않고 자신의 궁궐공사를 시킨 리더때문이라고 밝힌다. 유대가 망한 이유는 강력한 바빌론의 침공때문이 아니라, 공의롭지 못한 (이방신을 섬기는) 불신앙 때문이라고 예레미아서에서 분명히 하고 있다.
“This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.
And the answer will be: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.’ ””
