The list below covers a wide range of prepositions used in English, each with a practical sentence to demonstrate its use. Understanding and mastering the use of prepositions is a vital part of becoming proficient in English, as they play a crucial role in the language's structure.


Prepositions

A

Above: Higher than a point. The picture hangs above the fireplace.

Across: From one side to the other. She walked across the street.

Against: In opposition to. She leaned against the wall.
(반) toward(s): In the direction of.

Along: Moving in a constant direction on (a path or any more or less horizontal surface). We walked along the beach.

Amid: Surrounded by; in the middle of. The castle is set amid lush gardens.

Among(amongst): In the company of; surrounded by.
ex. He sat among his friends. / The cafe is between the library and the museum.

Around: Located or situated on every side. The fence runs around the property.

B

Behind: At the back of. The sun disappeared behind the clouds.
(반) ahead of; in front of; before + 장소 / 시간

Below: Lower in spatial position than. The temperature was below freezing.

Beneath: Directly under. The valley is beneath the mountain.

Beside: At the side of; next to. She sat beside her sister.

Beyond: On the farther side of; past. The road continues beyond the village.

But: Except; apart from; other than. Everyone but John was invited.

C

Considering: Taking into account. Considering the weather, the event was well-attended.

D

During: Throughout the course or duration. He fell asleep during the movie.

E

Except: Not including; other than. Everyone went to the party except Alice.

Except for: Were it not for. The room was clean except for some dust.

N

Near: At or to a short distance away; close to. The bus stop is near the supermarket.

Notwithstanding: In spite of; despite
Notwithstanding his lack of experience, he did well.

O

Of: Expressing the relationship between a part and a whole. The sleeve of his shirt.

Onto: Moving to a location on the surface of. Hold onto the handrail.

Out: From the inside to the outside of. He walked out of the room.

Over: Above or higher than something else, across, (about) He jumped over the fence.

T

Through: From one end or side to the other. She walked through the park.

Throughout: In every part of; all through. The museum is open throughout the year.

U

Underneath: Directly under. There's a label underneath the box.

Upon: Used like “on” to show that something is in a position above something else and touching it (up + on)
He placed the hat upon his head.

W

Within: Inside (something); +시간 The thief was caught within the building.

Without: In the absence of.


Complex Prepositions


A

Along with: In addition to; together with; on top of
He brought his guitar along with his amplifier.

Apart from: Excluding; other than; except for;outside of
Apart from a few scratches, the car is in good condition.

As for: Regarding; concerning; as to As for the budget, we need to discuss it in detail.

As of: Starting from a particular time. As of next week, I will be working from home.

As per: According to. As per our agreement, the payment will be made in advance.

Aside from: Apart from; except for. Aside from the final chapter, the book is almost finished.

B

By means of: Through the use of. He communicated his ideas by means of a presentation.

C

Contrary to: Opposite to. Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind.

Compared to/with: In relation to. Compared to his previous works, his latest movie is a masterpiece.

E

Exclusive of: Not including. The price is exclusive of tax.

F

Far from: Not at all; quite the opposite of. His performance was far from perfect.

For the sake of: For the purpose or benefit of. For the sake of clarity, please speak slowly.

I

In case of: In the event of. In case of fire, call 911.

In lieu of: Instead of; in place of In lieu of gifts, please make a donation to charity.

In accordance with. In accordance with the agreement, the payment is due tomorrow.

Next to: Adjacent to; beside. The cafe is located next to the library.

On account of: Because of. The event was postponed on account of rain.

On behalf of: Representing. I am speaking on behalf of my colleagues.

Out of: From within (inside) to the outside; motivated by.

Up until: Continuing to a particular time. (until의 강조)

Within reach of: Close enough to be reached or accessed.
The beach is within reach of the hotel.

Without regard to: Paying no attention to. She acted without regard to the consequences.
