Homeless people 대신 어떤 말을 사용해야할까요?

안녕하세요,
서로 다른 문화와 인종이 어우러져있는 미국, 그리고 그 다양성이 좀더 높은 캘리포니아주에 살면서 포용성과 다양성의 가치를 늘 생각하게 되었습니다. 한국에 있었을 때는 다양성 가치를 ‘당연히 그래야 하는 것'이라고 머리로 느꼈다면, 미국에 와서는 다양성의 가치를 매순간 현실적인 것으로 온 몸으로 느끼고 있는 것 같습니다. 특히 한가지 문화와 인종이 좀더 두드러지는 한국 사회에서 50년을 살면서 놓쳤던 부분을 미국에 살면서 다양한 문화와 인종 백그라운드의 사람들 시각을 미리 헤아리고 서로 존중하고 포용하는 민감도를 높이게 되었습니다.
제가 미국에 와서 가장 많이 들으면서도, 가장 듣기 싫은 질문이 뭔지 아세요?
“Where are you ORIGINALLY from?” 입니다.
여행하다가 “Where are you from?” 이라고 질문받을때 “I am from California.” 라고 답을 하면 100이면 100명 “도대체 원래 어디서 왔는데? (Where are you ORIGINALLY from)” 라는 질문을 받게 됩니다.
그런데 이는 무례한 질문으로 들릴 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그 질문을 하는 미국인들은 ‘미국인이면 이렇게 생겼을 것이고 영어가 모국어일 것’이라는 특정 의식을 갖고 있기 때문입니다. 다만 사실 언어사용에 있어 다양성에 대한 민감도를 높이는 일은 그런 미국 백인 뿐 아니라 모든 사람에게 필요합니다. 다양한 인종과 문화 역사가 있는 미국에서는 구체적인 실천내용을 모르면 의도하지 않게 다른 사람들을 낮게 보는 것으로 보이거나 마음의 상처를 줄 수 있으니까요.
미국에 온뒤 얼마 안되어, 매달 기자들과 공부하는 소규모 프레스 이벤트를 기획하게 되었는데요. 그때까지 별 생각없이 자주 쓰고 있던 ‘브라운백 런치(Brown bag lunch)'를 사용해서 ‘브라운백 런치 프레스 미팅'이라고 써서 내부 동료에게 공유했습니다. 그 이멜을 보내자마자, 평소에 친하게 지내고 있는 동료가 조용히 다가와 ‘브라운백 런치'라는 말은 흑인들에게는 부정적인 스토리가 있으니, 그 말 대신에 다른 말을 사용하는게 좋겠다고 말해 주었습니다. 그런 내용을 전혀 몰랐던 나는 바로 인터넷에 브라운백 용어에 대해 찾아봤고, 몰랐던 내용을 알게 되었습니다. 흑인에 대한 인종차별이 아직 만연해있던 60년대 한 대학교 학생들이 브라운백 색을 기준으로 흑인들의 피부색을 측정해서 파티 입장 여부를 가렸다고 합니다. 이를 알고 나서는 바로 브라운백 런치를 ‘런치앤런 (Lunch and Learn)’ 으로 바꾸어 사용했습니다. 이 계기로 내가 정말 다양한 사람들이 함께하는 미국에 살고 있구나, 를 실감하게 되었고 나 자신부터 언어 민감도를 좀더 높이고, 또 어떤 말이나 표현을 써서는 안되는지를 찾아보게 되습니다.
