학교에서 가르쳐 주지 않는 것들
학교에서는 왜 인생에서 중요한 것들을 가르쳐 주지 않는 걸까요? 학교에서는 왜 인간의 생로병사(生老病死)와 희로애락(喜怒哀樂)을 가르쳐주지 않는 걸까요? 학교에서는 왜 실제 생활에 필요한 돈을 버는 방법, 돈을 관리하는 방법, 돈을 증식하는 방법을 가르쳐 주지 않는 걸까요?
학교에서는 연애하는 방법, 결혼하는 방법, 좋은 부모가 되는 방법, 가족과 대화하는 방법도 가르쳐 주지 않습니다. 그리고 사회에서 성공하는 방법, 실패를 극복하는 방법, 분노와 슬픔 등 견디기 힘든 감정을 다스리는 방법 등도 가르쳐 주지 않습니다. 오로지 대학 진학과 서열을 매기기 위한 지식만 가르쳐줍니다. 한마디로 실생활에서 그다지 필요하지 않은 수많은 지식을 주입식으로 가르치고 있습니다.
요즘 시대에는 모든 과목을 다 잘할 필요가 없습니다. 자신의 재능과 관심에 맞는 분야를 선택해서 깊이 배우고 탐구할 수 있도록 기회를 제공해 주어야 합니다. 공부 잘해서 시험 잘 보는 것만이 능사가 아닙니다. 사람의 본성을 이해하고, 감정을 이해하고, 서로 협력하며 살 수 있도록 가르쳐 주어야 합니다.
그리고 공부에 대한 부담을 줄이고 학생에게 다양한 선택권을 주어야 합니다. 학생들은 학교에서 어려서부터 정해진 틀 안에서 남들과 경쟁하는 법만 배우고 있습니다. 직업을 선택하는 법, 인생을 즐기는 법, 다른 사람을 존중하는 법, 스스로 생각하는 법, 고난에 대처하는 법, 실수에서 배우며 성장하는 방법을 배울 수 있도록 다양한 기회를 제공해야 합니다.
취직에 유리한 각종 스펙을 쌓기 위해 스트레스를 받으며 공부하기보다는, 자신이 원하는 인생에 필요한 것들을 선택해서 하나하나 과정을 즐기면서 배울 수 있도록 여건을 마련해주어야 합니다. 과정의 즐거움을 모른 채 좋은 결과만 얻으려 투쟁하면 그게 바로 고통입니다. 배우는 과정을 즐기며 유능한 인재로 자랄 수 있도록 격려해주어야 합니다.
그리고 모든 사람이 동등하다는 걸 알려줘야 합니다. 돈이 많거나, 권력이 있거나, 유명하다고 더 특별한 사람이 아니라는 것을 가르쳐야 합니다. 살면서 쫄 필요 없다고, 자신감을 갖고 당당하게 살아야 한다고 가르쳐야 합니다. 이제 학교에서는 모든 학생이 자신의 강점을 살리며 자신의 꿈을 이룰 수 있도록 살아있는 지식을 가르쳐야 합니다. 모든 학생이 자신이 선택한 분야에서 즐겁게 공부하면서 행복하게 성장하는 모습을 보고 싶습니다.
Things that are not taught to students in school.
Why don't schools teach students the important things in life? Why don't schools teach students about human life, aging, illness, joys and sorrows? Why don't schools teach students how to make money, manage money, and grow money for real life?
Schools don't teach students how to date, how to get married, how to be good parents, or how to communicate with their families. And schools do not teach students how to succeed in society, how to overcome failure, or how to manage difficult emotions such as anger and sadness. Schools teach students only the knowledge they need to enter college. In short, we are repeatedly teaching students a lot of knowledge that is not very necessary in real life.
These days, students don't have to be good at all subjects. We must provide opportunities for students to choose a field that suits their talents and interests and learn and explore deeply. It is not best for students to study well and do well on exams. We must teach students to understand human nature, understand emotions, and live in cooperation with each other.
And we need to reduce the burden of studying and give students a variety of options. From a young age, students learn too much about competing with others within a set framework. We need to provide students with a variety of opportunities to learn how to choose a career, enjoy life, respect others, think for themselves, deal with hardships, and learn from mistakes to grow.
Rather than studying under stress to build up various qualifications that are advantageous for employment, we should provide conditions so that students can choose the things they need for the life they want and learn while enjoying each process. If students struggle to get only good results without knowing the joy of the study process, it is suffering. We must encourage them to enjoy the learning process and grow into capable individuals.
And we need to let students know that everyone is equal. We need to teach them that being rich, powerful, or famous doesn't make them more special. We need to teach them that there is no need to be afraid and that they should live with confidence. Now, schools must teach living knowledge so that all students can utilize their strengths and achieve their dreams. I want to see all students grow happily while having fun studying in their chosen field.
