이제 to부정사의 용법은 다 배운 것 같다.

다만 명사적 용법 중 한 가지 추가할 게 있다.

많이 들어봤을 것이다. 가주어 진주어!

(To read a book) is not easy.

앞에서 썼던 예문 중 하나다.

to read a book is not easy.라는 말이 있는데, to부터 시작하기가 입을 모아야 하고, 발음하기도 까다롭다. 즉, 이렇게 말하는 게 귀찮다!

실제로 말을 하다 보면 to부정사를 앞으로 꺼내면서까지 말하는 사람들 별로 못 본 것 같다.

대신 it is를 쓴다. 과거라면 it was를 쓴다.

이게 어떻게 되는 거 나면,

그냥 앞에 to부정사라고 쓰여있는 주어를 뒤에 옮겨주고, 뒤에 있는 형용사를 앞으로 당겨 주면 되는 것이다.

It is not easy to read a book.

은근히 쉽다.

이렇게 그냥 쓰면 된다.

사실 to부정사의 주어형은 거의 이런 식으로 많이 쓰이는 것 같다.

It is really good to learn English. 영어 배우는 게 진짜 좋다.

To learn English is really good.

It was cool to swim every morning. 아침에 수영하는 것이 참 시원했다.

To swim every morning was cool.

It is important to check your work for errors. > To check your work for errors is important.

It is necessary to arrive early to get good seats. > To arrive early to get good seats is necessary. 잠깐, 여기서는 to arrive to get이라는 to부정사가 두 번 나왔을까?

여기서 앞에 있는 to arrive은 우리가 지금 배우고 있는 to부정사형의 주어이고, 뒤의 to부정사는 그 주어자리에 있는 명사형의 to 부정사를 꾸며주는, to부정사의 형용사형이다. (명사를 꾸미는 것은 형용사이니까!)

It is not possible to finish the project by tomorrow.

> To finish the project by tomorrow is not possible.

It is difficult to understand quantum mechanics without a proper background.

> To understand quantum mechanics without a proper background is difficult.

It is easy to underestimate the complexity of this issue.

> To underestimate the complexity of this issue is easy.

이렇게 가주어 진주어 형으로 to부정사를 쓰면 된다.
