사람 살리는 시험
3학년 2학기 final OSCE
이번 파이널에서 가장 기억에 남았던 스테이션은 ER(응급의학과) 스테이션이었다.
케이스는 “50대 남자가 갑자기 식당에서 쓰러졌다. 의식이 없고 반응하지 않는다. 긴급구조하여 소생시키시오.”
차근차근 프로토콜대로 했다. 중간중간 교수님께서 물어보시는 내용에도 차분히 대답했다. CPR는 예측 가능한 시험 범위였기 때문에 많이 읽었던 부분이기도 했다.
그런데 교수님의 피드백은 내 예상과 달랐다.
“예림, 당신은 프로토콜을 모두 알고 있고 해야 할 것도 잘 해냈지만 아마 실제 상황에서는 사람을 살릴 수 없었을 거야. 네가 알고 있는 것들이 더 신속하고 명확하게 수행되어야 해.
너는 읽기만 하고 연습을 많이 하진 않았지? 너는 이 공부를 알기 위해 하는 게 아니라 사람을 살리기 위해 하는 거야. 앞으로 6학년 때까지 넌 꼭 이걸 기억해야 돼. 그런 의미로, 너에게 만점을 주지 않을 거야. 이걸 꼭 기억해 “

시험을 보며 그저 좋은 성적만을 위해 가르친 교수와 생명, 의사라는 소명의 role을 가르쳐주시는 교수는 차원이 다르다. 응급의학과 교수님의 가르침을 받을 수 있어 진심으로 감사한 시간이었다.
공부를 열심히 해서 뿌듯하기도 했지만 또 하나 배우고 깨달은 것에 감사를

A Life-Saving Exam
Among all the OSCE stations in my final exam, the one I’ll remember most was the Emergency Medicine station.
The case scenario was:
“A man in his 50s suddenly collapsed in a restaurant. He is unresponsive and unconscious. Perform emergency procedures to resuscitate him.”
I calmly followed the protocol step by step. I responded to the professor’s questions with composure.
Since CPR was a predictable topic, I had reviewed it many times in preparation.
But the professor’s feedback was not what I expected.
“Yelim, you know the protocol and you did everything correctly.
But in a real situation, you probably wouldn’t have been able to save him.
What you know must be executed faster, more decisively, more clearly.
You read a lot, but you didn’t practice enough, right?
You’re not studying this just to understand it — you’re studying this to save lives.
Remember that all the way until your sixth year.
So I’m not going to give you a perfect score — because I want you to remember this.”
Ah.
There’s a clear difference between a professor who teaches for grades and one who teaches the role of a doctor — the calling to save lives.
I’m truly grateful to have learned from my Emergency Medicine professor.
I was proud of how much I studied, but I’m even more thankful for the lesson I received.
