"You look like dog shit,"
Ed said, and, with slight embarrassment at having said this, added jovially.
"At least you're back on your feet. Beats the hospital bed, eh?”
He added the last sentence with a wink that made Alexander feel slightly uncomfortable, but shrugged it off, and invited them both inside.
"How are you both? I'm sure its been a busy week,"
said Alexander.
"You look fine Alex, really,"
Anna said, with a sharp look at Ed, who stood looking good-natured, but still a bit sheepish.
"And yeah," she added with a sigh,
"this week's been exhausting. Cynthia, How are you?"
"Good. Can I get you and Ed anything to drink? Maybe coffee, or something stronger?"
"We're still working, so coffee will have to do,"
she replied.
"Tea for me,"
said Ed.
"What?"
Alexander gave him a look of surprised amusement, his eye brows raising with a smirk.
"I'm trying to be more healthy."
Ed answered rather seriously. Alexander responded also in a serious way.
“We only have coffee, so that’s what you’re gonna get.”
Ed’s face looked slightly crestfallen for a moment, but he said lightly,
“Okay, whatever. No need to twist my arm.”
While Alexander boiled water, Ed and Anna heard the story about how Cynthia got injured, and were stunned.
"How serious was the wound?"
Anna asked with concern.
"I went to the hospital. It's just uncomfortable when I move, but its not very serious,”
Cynthia answered.
When Alexander offered them coffee, Ed asked him.
"Alex, did you hear about that guy?”
"Not at all, at least since we arrested him. What about him?”
“He is in custody. Of course, he ought to be. It’s obvious that he will inevitably end up in prison, isn’t it?”
Ed said with a nonchalant shrug.
Alexander raised his face and looked at Ed. He didn’t know at all. Cynthia got a report about his case from the office by phone, so she wasn’t surprised. She said nothing of Lucas to Alexander as she didn’t want him thinking about the case.
