Indefinitely descending Frost

by Rain Dawson

He glared at Cynthia. She stared at him back with frigid eyes. He couldn't read her mind. He was not used to seeing her face like that. It was so unfamiliar.

"Now you see who's lost reason.”

Cynthia told him quietly, and left the room. He dropped the bouquet, and sat on the floor. A few minutes later, he heard the front door open, and slam shut.

Regardless what happened, he was the person in charge of eventually closing the case. It didn't seem right to him that she took the case away from him because of her arbitrary judgment about his “personal emotions.” She was his wife before being his boss. If she wanted to talk about this matter with him, he would have discussed it in depth. His fury didn't ease for awhile. He refused to contact her.

He made his coffee. He usually didn't have caffeine at night, but he knew that sleep wouldn't come easily anyway. The heavy aroma of coffee filled the air and made him calm enough to relax. Some fragments of his negative feelings seemed to melt away, allowing him to see more clearly. He poured freshly brewed coffee in his mug, and sipped it. It was much darker than usual. Fatigue, which he had forgotten, swallowed him up like a tsunami.

He awoke with a start, as his head lowered. He was falling asleep while leaning on the couch. He rubbed his eyes. He grabbed the mug on the table in front of him. The coffee had already gone cold. He got up to move into the bedroom. He peered at the clock on the wall. It was already past 2 a.m. He began to worry about her gradually as the night wore on. He checked his phone regularly. Nothing. She seldom stayed outside without notifying him. He called her 1 or 2 times and she didn't answer at all. He left a message for her, and laid down on the bed. It seemed that the caffeine was working now. His brain rejected sleep. He checked the time again. 02:28 am.

He went into the bathroom to take a shower. While he looked in the mirror, it struck him that the reason his emotions so readily flared up into hot anger was not because of Cynthia, but his own disillusionment with himself and his life. He decided to leave without taking a shower. He felt being outside, with its myriad distractions, would be better than the beat of the water against his back in a place where his thoughts would inevitably wander. His heart was deadly agonized.

He regretted hurting her feelings in this way, to the extent that she would leave the house. This was not his intention, and he didn't need to have yelled at her like he did. He should have cared for her feelings more, and yielded. He should not have quarreled with Cynthia, because of Violet's case. What is the importance of whether he finishes the case or not? Why does it matter to him if this case even gets solved?

It was Cynthia who gave way to Alexander about the matter of Violet. She forgave him after he slept with Violet while she was with her dying aunt. He wasn't there with her, he was with Violet, deceiving her while caught in Violet's snare. Cynthia might have needed him, needed his comfort. But what had he given her? Nothing but a deep sense of betrayal. And now he wouldn't even try to accept Cynthia's point of view, all to stay tethered to a case that increasingly looked as if it wasn't based founded on anything genuine.

He remembered that it was always himself who had been comforted and shown support. When he was attacked by Sarah, talking about Adeline and Violet, the process of investigation, etc. Meanwhile, he didn't talk much about Cynthia's inner agony, or the things that bothered her. He didn't know what Cynthia had suffered, and was suffering. He remembered her sad face, which had unveiled itself sometimes. He didn't even ask about it. He not only avoided looking at her in these moments, but slapped her down in his obstinateness.

After a bit of time had passed, a new piece of text had joined others on a page in his notebook.

 2. Alexander

Cynthia

Violet

Cynthia

Cynthia
