She wasn't Cynthia, and Anna would never be able to occupy Cynthia’s place in his life. To be sure, it was unlikely, at least for the time being, that any woman would be able to stack up against Cynthia’s memory in his mind's eye, let alone to ascend to her position. The image of her simply remained too stark, too fresh for Alexander. He wanted Cynthia, and no one else would do. This, again, was certainly true.
But it wasn't the whole reason for his rejection of Anna, though it may certainly account for its tone.
To be honest, Alexander just didn't think of Anna in that way. The idea of them being together was inconceivable to him, and he feared the consequences that would come by him being so willing to sacrifice their working relationship for a romantic one in which he had no desire to be a part.
To evoke a popular axiom, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, and the potential fallout for their personal and professional lives, especially considering that Alexander didn't see it going anywhere, was unconscionable.
No, he said to himself. It's better to leave things as they are: let sleeping dogs lie, as they say. I did the right thing.
But did he? He really wasn't sure. Perhaps he could've been more sensitive to her feelings, maybe tell her that he valued their friendship, their working relationship, something. It was over now anyway. That was his reasoning, and he continued to walk toward the door.
He could sense that she was no longer following, and he looked behind. She was no longer there. He searched for her, and caught a glimpse of her quickly rounding the corner. He had a sudden impulse to go after her. A part of him didn’t want her to go like that; dejected and hurt, because of him.
But another part of him, a far more weary part still stricken by grief, didn't want to bother. He sighed and, giving into the latter, unlocked the door and headed into the building. He just wanted to go rest.
Anna didn't come to work the next day. Alexander tried to pretend not to care about that, but he worried a bit.
"Has she been in yet?"
he asked another coworker.
"She called in sick. She told me she will be off until Wednesday."
"Oh, I see."
Alexander returned to his seat. It was obvious that what happened the previous night left her shaken. He felt uncomfortable. This was exactly what he worried about.
After he got off, he called Anna. It was past 7 p.m. He thought Anna wouldn't pick up, but she answered. Her voice was much huskier than usual and subdued.
"Anna, are you seriously ill?"
"Not serious. I just caught a cold, since I roamed the street without an umbrella."
