He settled the airfare and hotel fees with a brief phone call. He checked his voucher for the hotel in the city. He would stay there as long as he wanted. He didn't know what was waiting for him there. He tried not to think about it.
'Whatever,' he thought. As the sun rose, a radiant orange red color dyed the sky. He listened to the sound of the airplanes flying overhead, and closed eyes. It felt like he was being sucked into the universe. He fell asleep, gradually releasing his consciousness entirely, including the burden and worry about his future.
A few hours later, he was in the middle of the exotic atmosphere and the smell of a totally different space from what he was used to. A new mood gripped him and coaxed him along, making him move ahead unquestioningly.
The hotel within which he would stay was not brand new, but clean and decent, furnished with luxurious facilities, and was an all around beautiful building. He was tired, but not the usual kind of tired. He unpacked, studied the coffee machine and brewed a cup.
He was delighted by the aromatic taste of the coffee. He enjoyed this short rest for awhile, but didn't stay a long time in the room. He left the room to browse the large number of shops in the vicinity of the hotel.
White sand beaches, sun, the cool, refreshing wind rolling off the surf, and nigh a cloud in the sky; this was where he belonged, at least right now anyway. In the nearby town, which was just a short 10 min walk from the shore, ancient structures and relics of antiquity stood shoulder-to-shoulder, almost in defiance of the passage of time, with modern cafés and boutiques. He sat up from where he was sitting and strolled over to the bartender who was manning a small drink and cocktail bar at the other end of the beach.
"Yanis," Alexander said, hailing the man behind the bar,
“Another gin and tonic, please. And this time make it a double.”
The people around him looked like mostly tourists. Groups of people, families, couples, friends, all walked passed. He sipped his liquor slowly, relaxed. It was pleasant being alone now, in this place. He decided he needed to let his worries go.
