"I think it'd be better for me to come back later."
She took her cleaning implements, and left the room. He felt a strange feeling, as if he wanted to reach out and tell her not to go. He wanted to talk to her, maybe ensure her first impression wasn't a bad one. Actually, 'not bad' isn't a strong enough characterization. He meant it as the opening prelude to falling in love, that sort of feeling. But he shook his head, took his time preparing to go out, and decided to take a walk nearby. He came back to the room earlier than planned. The room was being cleaned. He deliberately remained, though the door sign read 'vacant'. But she never came again.
The next morning, he was waiting for his room service. For some reason, he wanted to know about her. He thought of such ridiculous things to say, like “we can even be good friends,” and “let's spend some time together.”
The door squeaked open. He watched the outside of the door with expectation. But he was soon disappointed. It wasn't her. It was a stout, muscular, middle-aged woman with a sulky expression. She saw him, but wasn't surprised. She said something to him in the local dialect, and he understood little of it. He stammered, trying to describe his question, “Has the black haired woman been replaced by another employee?”
The sulky woman stared at him as if he were a speaking bird, or other such oddity, caught his point, and clapped her palms together, answering.
"Ah, that Asian girl! Yesterday was her last day. She decided to work just about a month for Tatiana. She injured her wrist, and couldn't work! The girl is a friend of Tatiana's son. That's what I heard."
She spoke excitedly until this point and went back to her work, despite Alexander’s presence.
He fell into low spirits. Why would he assume she was a permanent employee here when he knew nothing about her? So they were not meant to be. He smiled bitterly to himself. 'How could I be so silly.'
He forgot about her again, spending his days peacefully. He found a decent bookstore, bought several books about whatever happened to peak his interest. He read, sitting on a bench under the shadow of a tree on the beach from the morning onward, refreshed by the gentle brush of the sea breeze.
At night he usually wandered around calm streets lighted by only a few streetlamps. In the meantime, he began to take pictures of the city and write very short sentences.
