"Hi," he said, and, indicating her apartment just beyond the door, added,
"Wow, you have a lovely place."
"Thank you," she replied,
"It's a little messy actually. I'm in the process of reorganizing a few things and getting the place cleaned up."
"Could've fooled me,"
he laughed.
Seriously though, it didn't look nearly as disorganized or messy as his place, but he didn't say that part out loud. When he entered the living room, he noticed something. Obviously the floor was a little messy with a few big boxes piled on top of each other. But most of the furniture and household appliances seemed to be either lying out or otherwise stowed away in a corner. Some instant food and coffee, a few mugs and tea spoons, and bowls were on a vacant shelf. The scenery of the kitchen caught his eye. Water was boiling on the stove.
"A cup of black coffee is fine with you? Or with cream and sugar?"
she asked.
He stared into her eyes, which seemed so naive about the pain she was causing in his heart.
'Were you about to leave? Leaving me alone, preventing me even from trying to make any effort to water this seed of love for you? And you're smiling at me, not considering the turmoil in my heart, without knowing anything,' he thought.
He knew he was being silly and unreasonable. She didn't owe him anything. But he really was hurt seeing her preparing to go. He really didn't want to believe it, but there it was. In his mind, that song <Leaving on a jet plane> vaguely played for a few lines before blending back in to the cacophony of his other thoughts.
"Sure," he replied,
"I'd love a cup."
And, anticipating her question with a smile, he said,
"I take it black."
While she prepared his coffee, he decided to tear the band-aid off, and just come out and ask her that question which was tearing him apart inside.
"So, what's the occasion―moving all this stuff around―are you going somewhere?"
"Ah, this. Yeah, I will go back to my country this weekend. It's too messy, isn't it? We can leave soon, since we're going out to eat. I wanted to get the most out of this place before I have to leave. For example, to treat the person who comforted me in so many ways to a cup of coffee. You don’t have to help me arrange these things, I didn't call you for that,"
she added hurriedly with a smile while she swept her hair back with her fingers.
"Are you leaving for a short time, or . . . ”
Alexander was afraid to utter the rest, but, reluctantly, he swallowed and went on.
"Do you plan on coming back here, or are you leaving for good?"
he dreaded the answer.
He barely knew her, but for some reason, he could feel that they just clicked. He was skeptical of the idea of a soul mate, but the idea did appeal to his romantic sentiments, and he had to admit when he looked into her eyes, he felt there was some truth to the idea.
