“I just didn’t want to tell a person, someone I care for deeply, who was about to leave soon that the doctor said I would die in a few months.”
“But why?”
“Because she came here knowing she was going to leave.”
“There was a possibility that she might not have left because of your illness.”
“I didn’t want to make her stay by my side by making her sad,”

“What if she came back much earlier than you expected? What about when your illness gets too severe to hide?”
“I wrote out dozens of scenarios like that. There are many different ways to hide it from her. The best is that I recover completely, by some miraculous act of divine mercy, luck, or she just remembers me sometimes, and lives happily so that she doesn't think of coming back.”
“Do you not want her to see you like this? Is that it?”
Raul kept silent after Alexander’s question. The sun was rising brightly, and that made it easy to compare how far the shadows had grown on Raul’s face. After a few minutes, Raul opened his mouth again.
“She came here to escape from people around her, despair and fear. It seemed that she even felt some need to seek out a new source of happiness. As you know, here does not differ much from where she was. I don’t want her to be in a situation where she has to roam around here and there to search for happiness and to meet new people for that.
