Alexander was at a loss for words. This was the last thing he expected to hear, and, for a few moments, he remained silent. When Claire asked if he was still on the line, Alexander cleared his throat, apologizing for his delayed response, and said,
"Claire, it's so nice to meet you. Yes, I know Natalie.”
'They even sound similar,' he thought, happy to have even this indirect connection to Natalie and even more so at the prospect that he might be able to go to her after all. Alexander continued,
"She―I mean Natalie―recommended me for a job? In the company you own?"
"Yes," Claire replied,
"She said you are a very skilled writer, and we've been looking for talented hires to fill a number of positions in the company. Normally, there are certain pre-employment procedures, including a formal interview, but I trust my sister's judgment and am prepared to offer you a job for a probationary period, of course, but I'm sure you'll make an excellent fit for our organization."
"To be honest with you, this is all a lot to take in, but, thank you, Claire. I've been thinking about working abroad since very recently."
He didn't want to say that he hoped to find a path that would lead him to Natalie, but Claire seemed to read his mind.
"I think Natalie will be very happy to see you too,"
she exclaimed "Natalie" in a knowing tone, then adding,
"You've left quite the impression on my sister."
After exchanging their information and saying a few parting words, the call ended, and Alexander felt like his fortunes had just turned around in the best of ways. He found her, and, more importantly, found a vehicle that would allow him to stay with her.
He began to pack his possessions as soon as he hung up the phone with excitement and expectation. He would try to do what he had really wanted to do. Even if that meant falling in love with a woman as if he were following destiny. At that moment, he felt almost nothing but positive feelings.
The first things he put in the carrier were those books he bought here. One of them was a book on the history of literature which briefly mentioned the poet whom Natalie loved.
