From the beginning, he hadn’t taken much luggage with him. In fact, he decided to throw almost everything away; mostly old clothes, at least 10 years old, with the exception of books and the suit. But he didn’t forget his notebooks and some of the stationary he'd acquired. He casually flipped through new scribblings he had written in the notebooks. He had never, ever contributed to or published any type of article in his life. 'But now Artive is about to accept me as a writer, and only by Natalie's recommendation?'
In a split second, the trauma, which he had so thoroughly forgotten, resurfaced. The woman who offered him an unconditional favor, who was nearly his doom. Sarah. His hands dampened, as if he were drenched in sweat. What he was about to do was go to a foreign country he knew nothing about with the sole hope of connecting with Natalie: a woman who had all the power in the world to destroy him if she wished. That could be as dangerous as skydiving without a parachute. What if there is another purpose for this invitation?
He searched Artive on the internet, and found nothing suspicious. He just found various video clips of artists' activities. But his heart still felt as if it were mired in dirty smog. Like an evil miasma permeating his existence, insisting he not be at peace. He was haunted by these overwhelming, and quite devastating, possibilities flooding endlessly into his mind.
If something happened to him, he would be in a whole new world, as vulnerable as a turtle on its back. He sat down hard on the corner of the bed, collapsing onto it with the weight of his thoughts pressing him down, and sprawled out on the sheets. At some fleeting moment, between unconsciousness and lucidity, he fell asleep. He dreamed.
Maybe it is in the afternoon on a weekday. There are not many people coming and going. Alexander is sitting at the table of an outdoor cafe. There are two cups of coffee, with Cynthia next to him. He cannot feel anything amiss.
Her existence is so perfectly natural, as if she were a person still present in the world. He seems not to know she is deceased. A big poplar tree casts a long, cool shadow overhead. Dazzling sunlight shines through leaves so warm. Alexander looks up, facing this beautiful contrast, and closes his eyes against the sunshine, like a sunflower in the dusk.
When he opens them, and looks at Cynthia, she closes her eyes amidst the bright rays shining down on them, with both her hands clasping her coffee mug. He stares at her for a while with a gentle smile. In the course of time, she opens her eyes to look into his.
