It only took two plates of food to fill them up. It was already past 10 p.m. when they finished dinner.
"Two days left then?"
She stared at him when he posed the question.
"The day you leave,"
he explained.
"Ah, yes. It's almost time to go back."
There are too many things he wanted to ask. But two days was not sufficient to share all those with her. He was about to ask her to meet tomorrow as well, but it felt ridiculous to ask a woman whom he (still) barely knew and, whom would leave in less than a week, such a question. 'Why didn't she ask about a date first?' He thought grudgingly. But soon another voice appeared in his head. 'Should she?'
"We are getting to say goodbye here then.”
She said only this, stretching her hand out towards him for another handshake. He slowly grabbed her hand and shook it mechanically. He didn't want to express his disappointment to her. He didn't want tonight to end either. He didn't want this to be goodbye, to be the last time he saw her. What's more, he didn't want the last physical act between them to be that handshake. What did that say about how she felt towards him? He didn't know, and he wondered if she would even remember him once she returned home.
That voice inside him spoke up again. 'Not like this,' it protested. He felt possessed by a new confidence, a sort of recklessness even, brought about by the fear of never seeing this woman again; against the fading of possibility, rage against the dying of the light. He pulled her towards him, and hugged her. For a long moment, at least it felt long to Alexander, they embraced. When they released, she gazed into his eyes surprised, and Alexander peered back into hers. They were both speechless for a moment.
Alexander sheepishly broke the silence,
"I really hope I see you again.”
That was not a confession of love. It might have sounded like a ‘friendly’ phrase to her. Her expression was dumbstruck for awhile and she soon smiled.
"I'm glad you said that. If destiny allows, we will definitely see each other again."
Alexander said nothing. She looked like she was thinking something.
"Do you want to join us tomorrow evening? Raul and Karol will hold a small concert at a bar. We all will be happy if you come and we can spend another evening together before I leave.”
She seemed happy when she said this, but Alexander couldn't tell if that was because she was particularly happy that they would be able to see each other once more, excited at the prospect of spending time with her friends, or because she was looking forward to her journey. He wanted to believe the former, but part of him feared being too eager. She was leaving after all, and he had no clue if she felt the same way about him as he felt about her.
