Alexander arrived at their meeting place earlier than expected. The light, cheerful atmosphere was as typical of a casual Latin American restaurant. Several tables were occupied by people. He ordered a beer first. He was thinking as he sipped his glass of beer. So, today is her last day here.
Her flight was at 4 a.m. He knew she would stay here until the time she was to leave for the airport to check in for the flight. She wanted him to spend her last moment with her. He felt a sort of sadness when his thoughts reached this conclusion.
He was going to miss her terribly. He knew that, and he felt the edge of those feelings start to emerge from the depths of his heart as he nursed his beer and, consequently, let his guard down to himself. The truth was that he hadn't known her for that long at all, but she left a great impression on him. He was embarrassed to say, but that impression felt even stronger than what he felt the first time he met Cynthia. 'She was special,' he reflected.
'Am I really going to let her go?' Just as this thought crossed his mind, he saw them come in through the front entrance.
Raul walked in front of Natalie as both made their way towards the table. He smiled at Alexander, but Alexander could tell that Raul was less than happy to see him.
"How have you been?”
Raul extended his hand towards Alexander, and, as they shook, he could tell that Raul's hand, clammy though it was, was intentionally gripping his hand quite hard: a show of force Alexander chose to ignore, as he brushed past Raul after a brief, but cordial, verbal greeting, and lightly embraced Natalie, thanking her for the invite.
"You don't have any baggage with you? I thought your flight is 8 hours from now on,"
Alexander asked.
"I've checked all my luggage beforehand," she answered,
"I can stay here until midnight.”
Alexander gave an inward sigh of relief. He was happy that his time with her wouldn't be cut short. At the same time this relief was yet a bitter reminder of their untimely parting.
"That's great," Alexander responded,
"We have plenty of time to see you off then,"
he smiled.
'But this won't be goodbye,' he thought, 'not in a final sense.' He smiled. Alexander hadn't yet decided what he wanted to do, but . . . He knew somehow, that, as far as he was concerned, this wouldn't be their last meeting. But what could he do despite those complex feelings?
Raul nodded once as he looked towards Alexander, and Karol winked at him. Natalie stretched her hand to him, as if out of habit, in an affectionate way.
"Did you wait long?”
she asked, eyeing his glass of beer.
"No, I've just gotten it,”
he answered as light as he could.
He watched as Natalie poured water for them into each glass. She smiled at him, handing the cup to him. He smiled back and thought, 'That smile . . . I'll might never have another moment like this.'
