“We are going on stage,”
Karol said to them. Raul touched Natalie’s shoulder lightly.
“You really won’t sing it for me?”
Natalie asked Raul tenaciously.
“No sé(I don’t know),”
Raul persisted. Seeing Natalie’s sullen face, he chuckled. He left the table with Karol.
A few minutes passed, the lights of the bar dimmed, and the stage was illuminated splendidly. In the meantime, he found Raul and Karol on stage. It looked like a pretty big band. In addition to Raul and Karol, there were a drummer, organist, and three or four various musicians with their instruments.
With clamorous drum sounds, they began to sing very loud music, and people in the bar got up and began to dance to the rhythm. Alexander could see Karol singing with other singers. But Raul didn’t sing, he just played his base guitar. The concert was much better than Alexander thought it would be. He enjoyed it, truly, and so did Natalie.
He checked his watch. Time was slipping by. As the time given him was not much, he needed to clear his head a bit and gather his thoughts.
He spoke,
"I can go with you."
Never in his experience had so few words taken so much effort to bring forth. He felt like he was back in high school, confronting his crush for the first time, bracing himself for the rejection to come.
"What, you want to accompany me to the airport?”
she said with a laugh, but she looked intently into his eyes, as if trying to read his thoughts.
"Perhaps I could use a change of scenery. To he honest . . . Look, I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going. In life, I mean,"
said Alexander frankly, with the relieved air of someone removing a load from their back. She looked at him silently for a moment with a curious, but not altogether unpleasant expression.
He continued,
"I had things figured out many times before. I thought I was going to be a writer, then a cop, then everything fell apart when old dreams started to seem like they could become reality, then I lost my muse.”
He took a long sip of water, gathering his courage for what he wanted to say next,
"Then I met you, and I don't want to stay here anymore."
He gazed into her eyes, and she looked back with that same expression. Alexander fancied that she understood his meaning. She smiled at him, and asked,
"Well then, where do you want to go?"
He smiled back. His throat felt dry, but he resisted the urge to drink more water. He needed to get this out, or he knew he'd regret it.
"Wherever you are.”
At first, he thought he only saw a shock-stricken expression on her face. But she seemed to decide to regard his words as a joke.
“That’s very sweet of you to say. I’ll gladly go with you to the airport. Thanks.”
She clinked her glass against his lightly. He didn’t know whether or not it was a fortunate thing that she didn’t accept his words seriously, as he had no clue where she would go next. He drank down a pint glass of beer. Since the taxi would come soon, he helped her with her small bit of luggage and sundry things.
