Snap, the owner of social media platform Snapchat, announced it will lay off 1,000 employees, including 16% of its full-time staff, to cut costs and increase the use of AI.
Snap's CEO stated that the company will cut $500 million in costs in the second half of this year and also canceled hiring plans.
He added that the increasing use of AI eliminates repetitive tasks, speeds up operations, and benefits stakeholders, such as partners. For example, 65% of the code at Snap is generated by AI.
Snap's investors welcomed the layoff plan, and the stock price rose 9% to $5. Nevertheless, it remains down 30% from the beginning of the year.
From the beginning of this year so far, 90 tech companies have laid off 70,000 employees.
